Back on Vestvågøy we drive through Leknes – the administrative centre of the island – stopping to look round the Vestvågøy Museum, situated in the old school building. Here we will learn about the living conditions in bygone days, and see a genuine ‘rorbu’ (fisherman’s cabin) standing in the courtyard.

We stop at Borg to visit the important archaeological find that was made here by a farmer in the early 1980’s. While ploughing his land, he discovered an ancient Viking farm, proving that the Lofoten Islands formed a centre of power during this great era.

The Lofoten Islands appear to be a wall of mountains, dramatically rising from the ocean. Yet within the valleys, and even the fishing ports, there is lush, green vegetation. Fishing and agriculture are the main industries.

In just half an hour our coach will take us on this winding road up to Turtagrø – the birthplace of alpine sport in Norway with a splendid view of the Hurrungane massif in Jotunheimen.
