Beautifully located on the Casco Bay Peninsula, Portland is the largest city of Maine - the Pine Tree state, with a spectacularly corrugated pine-clad coastline.

Since its birth in 1632, Portland has triumphed over three great fires (started by Indians, the British and by accident in turn) to become the attractive community of today - seen at its best on a stroll through the revitalised Old Port Exchange District near the waterfront, whose historic buildings now house smart shops and restaurants - order the succulent clams or lobster.
