Porto Empodocle
This is the stepping stone to Agrigento, surely one of the most outstanding archaeological sites in all of Italy.
Founded by the Greeks some 2500 years ago, the original glory of Agrigento, which the Greek poet Pindar called 'the most beautiful city of mortal men' is today history. Yet even now the ruined structures of the Valley of the Temples below the town have an imposing grandeur of scale (the Temple of Jupiter was reputedly the ancient world's third largest temple) that makes it possible to visualise Agrigento's lost magnificence.
