St Lucia is the sort of island that travellers to the Caribbean dream about – a small, lush tropical gem.
St Lucia was first settled by Arawak Indians around 200 AD, who were later superseded by the Caribs. There was no European presence established on the island until the 1550s, when the notorious buccaneer Peg-Leg le Clerc set up a base on Pigeon Island, from where he mounted raids on passing, treasure-rich Spanish galleons.
