Introduction to Valletta, Malta

A tiny island with an epic and heroic history, Malta is one of the most scenic ports of arrival anywhere. The 16th century walled capital of Valletta, with its Grand Harbour, is a treasure-chest bristling with baroque architecture. See the St. John’s Co-Cathedral and its incredibly ornate chapels created by the Knights Templar.

You could be fooled for thinking you were visiting Valletta at dusk by looking at its sundrenched stone walls, an almost permanent warm honey hue. Quite possibly one of the most stunning cityscapes you will see in the Mediterranean, Valletta boasts a treasure-chest of baroque architecture filtering down into the deep-water Grand Harbour.

A tiny island with an epic and heroic history in which invasion and siege have seen the influences of Romans, Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Crusaders and, of course, Britain all leave an enduring mark upon its cultural heritage. Valletta is also home to The Knights of Malta, an order created in the Middle Ages and still active today.

From the city centre you can see colourful and decorative balconies overlooking the worn and tethered streets below. Restaurants and shops leap out from side streets and tucked away courtyards. You can take a number of shore tours to experience surrounding destinations, such as the silent city of Mdina.

City of the Knights ( Tour R)

Walking level 3 - extensive walkingExtensive walking

Take a short drive around the impressive bastions of Valletta and explore the legacy of the Knights of St John, who gave the country the world renowned Maltese Cross.

Your tour will commence with a drive, before visiting the Upper Barracca Gardens for a brief photo stop. The Gardens form a splendid array of Romanesque arches, balustrades and promenades, and offer an incomparable view over the Grand Harbour.

This will be followed by a walk which includes an inside visit of St John’s Co-Cathedral, including Caravaggio’s famous masterpiece The Beheading of St John. Apart from its place among the most magnificent Baroque churches in the world, St John’s Co-Cathedral is also an architectural metaphor for the Order of the Knights of St John, who built it between 1573 and 1578. The simple post siege façade reflects the Knights’ military pragmatism, whilst the gilded vaults, painted ceilings, polychrome marble floors and general Baroque exuberance of the lavish interior reveal the sophistication, power and wealth of the Order.

Your tour continues with an inside visit of the Palace State Rooms and Tapestry Chamber. The State Rooms are the showpiece of the Presidential Palace, sited at the heart of Malta’s UNESCO World Heritage capital city. The palace itself was one of the first buildings in the new city of Valletta founded by Grand Master Jean de Valette in 1566, a few months after the successful outcome of the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.

You will then have some time at leisure to perhaps explore the narrow streets of the Maltese capital.

VALLETTA - INFORMATION

Malta became a British possession in 1814. This little island bravely supported Britain throughout both World Wars and earned a unique George Cross for its heroism during World War II. Despite obtaining independence in 1964, it still remained part of the commonwealth. Malta became a republic in 1974 and joined the EU on 1st May 2004.

The capital of Malta is Valletta, which is built on the northern part of the Scriberras peninsula, separating the Grand Harbour from Marsamxett Harbour. This fascinating city is completely surrounded by fortifications and dates back to the mid-16th century.

One of the best ways to appreciate Malta is by enjoying a cruise along the natural harbours of Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour – sit back and relax as you admire the island from the sea on Tour C.

The official currency of Valletta is the Euro. Please note that as your call falls on a Sunday, churches will be closed due to religious functions, and most shops will also be closed.
