Arctic Cathedral, Tromso, Norway

Introduction to Tromsø

The attractive town of Tromsø, known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, boasts stunning coastal views from Mount Storsteinen, reached by cable car. Visit the iceberg-shaped ‘Arctic Cathedral’ or take a tour to the Tromsø Wilderness Centre to meet the huskies that call this area home.

The island city of Tromsø is one of northern Norway’s true delights. Rich with neo-classical architecture, the city centre contains the largest number of wooden houses in Northern Norway, as well as attractive buildings from later periods. Charming and interesting, Tromsø is a real joy to explore.

With numerous sights and attractions to enjoy, visiting Tromsø is never dull. The city’s most recognisable landmark is the must-visit Arctic Cathedral. Built in 1965, the cathedral’s distinctive iceberg-shaped design was inspired by the landscapes of Northern Norway and features a beautiful glass mosaic. There are also many museums and galleries in the city, including the Perspektivet Museum – set in a neo-classical building from 1838 - that exhibits the history of Tromsø, the Art Museum of Northern Norway and the Mack Brewery.

Tromsø is also home to Polaria, an Arctic aquarium that is popular with locals and tourists alike. The aquarium contains large tanks full of Arctic fish species and display areas where friendly bearded seals perform tricks for the crowd.

Not-to-be-missed are the amazing views of Tromso and the surrounding areas from the top of the Storsteinen Mountain, which stands 420 metres above sea level. Accessible via cable car, the peak is easy to reach and one of the most popular tourist spots in Tromso.

The entire interior fittings above and below deck are original, including the sailing rig, the small hunting boats, tools and equipment, still in place. It sailed for 33 hunting seasons, primarily in the West Ice and was used for Arctic exploration. Its final season was in 1981. Housed in a protective glass building, the boat can now be admired as a monument to the important tradition of Arctic hunting in the history of Tromsø. The aurora has always fascinated mankind and people travel thousands of miles just to see the brilliant light shows in the sky. The auroras occur when highly charged electrons from the solar wind interact with elements in the earth’s atmosphere. Solar winds stream away from the sun at speeds of approximately one million miles per hour. When they reach earth some 40 hours after leaving the sun they follow the lines of magnetic force generated by the earth's core and flow through the magnetosphere, a teardrop-shaped area of highly charged electrical and magnetic fields. The auroras generally occur along the ‘auroral ovals’, which centre on the magnetic poles (not the geographic poles) and roughly correspond with the Arctic and Antarctic circles. The lights from cities and populated areas will reduce the possibility of seeing the aurora as its degree of intensity varies.

The best chance to see the aurora is therefore to leave the city behind and head out where the air is less polluted by artificial light. You will hopefully be rewarded with a glimpse or two of the fantastic Northern Lights. You will stop at a camp, or base station – the aurora can often be seen clearer on your camera screen than with the naked eye. The most usual sightings are of green wisps in the sky, but larger outbursts with other colours may also be seen.

There is no guarantee you will see the Northern Lights, but this tour will give you a good chance. After this cold, but hopefully rewarding, Arctic experience you return to your awaiting ship.

Just a short drive from Tromsø will take you to the winter activity area. On arrival you will be met and given advice on all of the activities, before choosing your equipment and having a go for yourself. It is important that you wear winter clothing suitable for the conditions and the activities.

Balance and co-ordination is required for snowshoes – allowing you to walk on deep snow with relative ease. The most fun can be had on a toboggan – go back to your childhood and enjoy the thrill of speeding down a hill! You can also choose to have some time out and be served a hot drink and Norwegian lefse (a type of flatbread). For those who prefer a more sedentary time, there will be a warming bonfire to sit beside.
