Thira, Santorini

Introduction to Thira, Santorini

Explore the extraordinary landscape of Santorini's western edge and wander the delightful streets of Thira, the island's main town.

The stunning Greek island of Santorini boasts some of the most impressive natural landscapes in Europe. Created by a huge volcanic eruption in 1450BC, the island is a famous for its dramatic cliff faces and pretty towns and villages.

The island’s beautiful main town – Thira – is perched atop one of Santorini’s aforementioned cliffs and is truly breath taking. As you journey towards the town from the port via the handy cable car or daunting zig-zag steps that wind their way up the side of the cliff, you can’t help but wonder how the bright white houses manage to cling to the rocks.

Despite the town’s unique location and layout, it offers all of the delights you would expect to find in such a beautiful Greek town. There are plenty of places to indulge in a little shopping, several bars, cafes and excellent bakeries, and there’s even room for an interesting museum that houses a stunning collection of Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts.

Be sure to explore the rest of ‘Caldera’s Eyebrow’ – the collection of towns and villages that line the rocky cliff face. The pretty towns of Oia, Imerovígli and Firostefáni offer stunning views of the island’s volcano and the beautiful blue waters that surround the island.

This tour offers a glimpse in to Santorini’s history, combined with a visit to one of the island’s oldest vineyards.

Depart your ship by tender for the short crossing to Athinios port, where you will take a short scenic drive to one of the most atmospheric places on the island, Pyrgos. Standing proudly in the centre of Santorini, approximately 450 metres (1,480 feet) above sea level, Pyrgos is a fortress settlement – typical of the Cyclades. This settlement of outstanding beauty is characterized by an impressive number of chapels and churches scattered along the narrow alleyways in between traditional mansions. At the top of the village, you will find the remnants of the Venetian Castello – a fortified construction built to protect the inhabitants from pirate attacks – this is the highest point of Santorini, and affords spectacular views of the island and its famous caldera.

Your tour continues towards Exo Gonia to visit the well-known Santorini winery, The Antonis Argyros’ Art Space. The winery here has been in the hands of the same family for generations. Everything here is a reflection of the past, merged seamlessly into the present. The ancient wine cellar, carved from the pumice rock, has been transformed into an art gallery, displaying works from both Greek and foreign artists.

Your host will show you around the premises, including the new winery housed eight metres underground. Learn about the wine production process, and how it has changed over the generations; and gain an insight into what makes the vineyards in Santorini so successful. At the end of your visit, you will be invited to sample some of the wines that the Argyros family is so proud of – Assyrtiko, Mavrotragano, Athiri and Voidomato are all produced here; along with the Vinsanto – a liquor wine aged for a minimum of seven years in wooden barrels to provide an unforgettable taste.

Finally, your tour will end in Thira – Santorini’s capital city – offering dramatic views of the caldera and volcano, and with a wide range of craft shops alongside boutiques, and modern bars and restaurants. Enjoy some free time here before taking the cable car down to the small harbour of Scala, from where the tenders will take you back to the ship.
