Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn, Estonia at the old city.

Introduction to Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is unquestionably one of Europe's most magical capitals.

This ancient Hanseatic city is justifiably proud of its beautiful churches, solid limestone houses and well-preserved cobbled streets. The Toompea hill, with its medieval houses and alleyways, is the oldest part and at the foot of the hill substantial remains of the city wall can still be seen, surrounded by well-maintained parks. The medieval town hall is one of the best preserved in northern Europe, and the weathercock, Gamle Toomas, on top of the building symbolises Tallinn.

The ornate Alexander Nevskij Cathedral was built at the end of the 19th century when Estonia was part of Tsarist Russia. Kadriorg’s Castle was built by an earlier Tsar, Peter the Great, and now houses part of the Estonian Museum of Art. The “Peek into the Kitchen” tower has an exhibition of Tallinn’s military history.

Take this unique opportunity to gain an insight into the Estonian way of life with the chance to visit the home of a local.

You will commence your tour passing through the pulsating city centre, enabling you to view the skyline of the Old Town before heading towards the less visited parts of Tallinn -  Mustamäe and Nõmme. Mustamäe is a typical Soviet residential area which was established in the 1960’s. Nõmme, the  forest district.  of Tallinn owes its existence to the Baltic-German landowner, Nikolai von Glehn (1841 - 1923), who not only succeeded in turning his Tsarist-era estate into a smalll town, but also earned a reputation of an eccentric. When the railway line from Russia to the West Estonian military town of Paldiski first opened, Glehn started to give away his land for housing projects and founded small factories and service establisments for the new residents. The Nõmme of today feels like a big village with family homes on large garden plots.

Once In Nõmme, you will discover it’s traditional Estonian market, which has been there for over a hundred years. Here you can buy fresh foodstuffs, plants and flowers all year round, and a lot of them come from the gardens in Nõmme. You will also find here the monument to Nikolai von Glehn. Enjoy some time at lesiure to explore the market.

Re-boarding your coach, you continue to visit a visiting a private homes in Nõmme. Upon arrival your host/hostess will give you a tour of the house and tell you about Estonian home life such as gardening, how they furnish their homes, traditions and more.  Feel free to ask questions which will help you understand their way of life. You will then be treated to coffee and some homemade pastries as you get to know the Estonian culture up close and personal!

After this enjoyable break you will drive towards Glehn’s park where you will be given a brief sightseeing tour of the Castle (external), built in 1886 and its surroundings including it’s original buildings including the palm house, the observatory tower and sculptures such as "Kalevipoeg", Crocodile - all of which have been designed by Nikolai von Glehn himself. (All external visits)
