On this excursion, combine a sightseeing tour of Szczecin with a visit to the Stara Komenda Brewery.

Departing the quayside, you will first visit the courtyard of the Castle of the Dukes of Pomerania. The castle was almost completely rebuilt after damage suffered during World War II. Travelling on you pass the City Hall on your way to the Cathedral of St James, which was also rebuilt after almost total wartime destruction. The cathedral features several Gothic altars originating from other churches in Pomerania, which you can admire during a brief inside visit.

Next, you will visit the the Stara Komenda Brewery, which is located in a former military headquarters more than 150 years old. Here, you can see how the brewing takes place. After learning all about the process, you will be able to taste the locally brewed beers, as well as other products, accompanied by a small polish snack.

Next, proceed to Hakenterrasse, now renamed Waly Chrobrego Street. From the terraces, with their decorative pavilions and a statue of Hercules Fighting the Centaur by Ludwig Manzel, there is a fine view of the harbour.

Szczecin city suffered severely during World War II; post-war restoration has been confined to its more important buildings, Step back in time as you visit a World War II anti-aircraft shelter, and learn more about the city’s wartime past.

Leaving the quayside you will first visit the Dukes of Pomerania Castle, founded in the mid-13th century. After serve damage during World War II, the castle was almost completely rebuilt and its once-magnificent interior recreated. Across the road is the Gate of Prussian Homage, formerly the Royal Gate, one of a pair that was built under Swedish rule between 1726-8. Re-joining your coach, you continue on for a visit to the Cathedral of St James, passing the City Hall on your way.

Next, you will pass by the Harbour Gate, Grunwaldzki Square and the Solidarity Monument to reach Hakenterrasse, where a brief visit will be made before you continue to a World War II anti-aircraft shelter. Here reconstructions of shelters have been preserved, so that visitors can gain an insight in to what life was like during bomb rides. Learn more about the shelter construction technique, the first bomb rides on Szczecin, city fights, formation of Polish people power and how the Polish dealt with the aftermath of a city in rubble. After this interesting and moving visit, you will re-board the tour coach and travel back to your awaiting ship.

Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended; helmets will be provided and must be worn. In the event of rainy weather, raincoats will be provided.
