Don’t miss this chance to visit the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat, and take a tour into the exclusion zone. Access to this area is strictly controlled, and this tour allows you a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the devastation of 21 years of volcanic eruptions.

In 1995, the previously dormant Soufriere Hills Volcano began to show signs of eruption. Over the following two decades, numerous eruptions forced two thirds of the population to flee, and almost completely destroyed the southern part of the island.

Your tour begins with an approximate one and a half hour ferry crossing from Antigua to Little Bay, located in the north of Montserrat. From here, you will journey to the exclusion zone in the south of the island, pausing en route at Runaway Ghaut to view the lush, tropical fauna and sample some of the cool, pure mountain spring water.

Your next stop is at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory in the parish of St Peter. The Observatory was established in 1995, following the first eruption of Soufriere Hills. Here you will be invited to watch a short film highlighting the events that occurred during the 21 years of eruptions, and enjoy spectacular views of Chances Peak and the Soufriere Hills Volcano. Keep your eyes peeled for the island’s national bird, the Montserrat Oriole.

Continue to the Montserrat Springs Hotel in Richmond Hill, once the island’s finest hotel until abandonment during the evacuation of Plymouth in 1996. From the hotel’s viewing platform, you will be able to experience a bird’s eye view of the ‘buried city’ of Plymouth, before making your way into the island’s former capital for a close up look at the destruction caused.

Your final stop of the day will be to Luv’s Sea Island Cotton, where you will be able to observe the loom at work, producing hand-woven scarves, belts and shawls from locally-grown sea island cotton.

SPECTACULAR ANTIGUA (TOUR A)

On this tour, indulge in the magnificent colonial history of Antigua. Once the naval base for the British in the Caribbean, Antigua’s strategic location and excellent natural harbours create an island haven for both ships and sun seekers alike.

Begin with a journey through the centre of the island, travelling past quaint villages which epitomise the typical West Indian style and culture.

At the Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre there will be a 15 minute cultural audio-visual show about Antigua’s past and present. A short tour of the area will follow, as will one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Caribbean.

At the Blockhouse Ruins, a powder magazine, gun platforms, water catchment, officers’ barracks and a 15 kilogram (32 pound) cannon still exist as evidence that this was a main lookout post in 1787. The officers’ quarter, known as the Blockhouse, is located on the approach road to the cliff top; this is where the first West Indies Regiment was stationed. In this modern day, Eric Clapton’s house can be viewed in the distance from this point.

Another short drive will take you to Shirley Heights, located on the most southerly point of the island, 148 metres (485 feet) above the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Named after Sir Thomas Shirley, this was the principal fortification of the British fleet stationed at English Harbour. The original ordnance building here has been converted into a bar befitting seadogs young and old, and unearthed artefacts are displayed alongside a list of regiments stationed at English Harbour during the 1700s. Physically, little has changed over the past two centuries and the original kitchen, water cistern and ammunition magazine remain. There is a dramatic cliff-top view over Nelson’s Dockyard village, Galleon Beach and Falmouth Harbour. On a clear day it is possible to see the island of Montserrat, some 45 kilometres (27 miles) away.

After admiring these distant views, you descend to sea level again, for a visit to Nelson’s Dockyard village, where you can explore the delights of this historic site. It was built in 1725 to provide a base for a squadron of ships patrolling the West Indies, maintaining Britain’s sea power. Today it is the world’s last remaining Georgian naval dockyard still in use; sleek yachts now moor at the old stone quayside.

Indulge yourself with an unforgettable day out cruising the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean on a state of the art catamaran.

A short walk along the quayside brings you to the luxury Mystic Cruises catamaran. On board, we will sail along the beautiful coast line of Antigua, before stopping at one of the island’s many picturesque beaches.  Here, your friendly crew will serve you with a choice of refreshing juices or sodas.  Top up your tan in the warm Caribbean sun, or cool off in the turquoise waters.

Next, set sail to the west coast, and your second beach stop. Again time to relax as your crew prepare a delicious lobster buffet. Lunch will be eaten on board, accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine.

After lunch, feel the warm, tropical breeze in your hair as you sail back along the coastline to your awaiting ship to the soundtrack of Caribbean music.

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU? While there is a minimal amount of walking involved, there are steps to be negotiated on board the catamaran, therefore we do not recommend this tour for wheelchair users.  Shoes that you do not mind getting wet should be worn, as participants may have to wade through shallow water in order to reach the beaches. We recommend that you come already wearing your swimsuit under casual clothing and do not forget your towel. Whilst there is plenty of shade on the catamaran, please do not forget to wear adequate sun protection. Complimentary drinks will be served during your cruise; however alcoholic drinks will not be served until after the beach stop.

Antigua is blessed with one of the most majestic and stunning sunsets in the Caribbean, and undoubtedly the best way to experience this is aboard a catamaran at sea.

Disembarking the ship, you will be greeted by your guide and escorted a short distance to your catamaran. A warm and friendly Antiguan welcome and a complimentary drink awaits you.

Your sunset cruise offers a unique escape from the crowds, as well as magical views of the stunning Antiguan coastline. Lounge on the sun deck or find a cosy spot as you glide by palm trees waving in the cool evening breeze and stretches of dazzling white-sand set against rolling green hills. As the golden sun begins its descent below the horizon, toast your enjoyable day in Antigua with a beverage of your choice whilst enjoying the ambience.

Sit back, relax and admire the twinkling lights of St John’s in the distance as you sail the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean.

All too soon, it is time to return to the quayside and your awaiting ship.
