Skjolden, Norway

Introduction to Skjolden, Sogn og Fjordane

Sitting at the end of the world's longest fjord, Skjolden is considered one of the world's most breathtaking destinations and is overlooked by soaring mountains and dramatic cliffs.

Beautiful Skjolden is a place for superlatives. It sits at the end of the world’s longest fjord, and is perfectly placed for tours to the Jotunheimen Mountains and Jostedalsbreen, mainland Europe's largest glacier.

Ludwig Wittgenstein lived and worked in Skjolden in the early 20th century. Considered by some to be the greatest philosopher of his era, Wittgenstein continues to influence western thinking in logic and language, ethics and religion, and he wrote many of his most influential works when he stayed here. Not to be missed are Feigum waterfalls – the most spectacular in Norway.

Your tour commences with a walk along the fjord to Skjolden centre. A brief stop is made at the old Hydro Quay where your guide will explain a little about Skjolden before you cross the Fortun River via the old bridge to arrive in the centre. Upon arrival here your guide will point out areas of interest before you continue.

At Gulbrandsgarden Farm you will learn about the history of the area, what is grown here and the animals that you will meet. In addition to having many llamas - the largest herd in western Norway; there is also a flock of an old breed of Norwegian sheep and the farm grows strawberries and raspberries. You will be invited to assist the handlers in harnessing the llamas and your llama walk around the farm will then commence. Once back at the farmyard, there is more time to handle the llamas, pose for photos and offer them some food. A relaxing drink break, with chance to admire your settings and see what else is happening on the farm, is a fitting end to this unusual experience.

To conclude your tour, the return walk to Skjolden takes an alternative route with a short detour, for those who wish, to a viewpoint – approximately 70 metres (229 feet) above sea level. Here you will overlook the farm, Skjolden and along the lovely Lustrafjord.
