Seville, Spain

Introduction to Seville, Spain

Seville is a delightful port to visit on your cruise holiday.

Straddling the Guadalquivir River, Seville is a glorious mix of grand boulevards, narrow streets, cobbled alleys and pretty squares. The Moorish occupation of Iberia, which lasted until 1248AD, left its mark on the town. The 100m Giralda clock tower of Seville Cathedral was originally the minaret of the Almohad Mosque and is a fine example of the Moorish influence on the city.

The city’s famous cathedral is the biggest Gothic building in the world and third-largest church in Europe. Recognised by UNESCO for its historical and cultural importance, the cathedral is where the tomb of Christopher Columbus and some quite wonderful works of art are found. Opposite is the Alcázares Reales, a royal palace that also has Moorish origins and that now blends in Renaissance and Mudéjar styles. The upper parts are still used as a Royal residence and the palace is another of Seville’s UNESCO-listed sites.

The spectacular Parque de Maria Luisa has wonderfully mature trees, and is surrounded by fine mansions, many of which have been turned into museums. Nearby is the former Royal Tobacco Factory where Carmen (as in the opera) worked.

The Holy Trinity, or golden triangle, of flamenco is thought to be the area where all the major styles of cante jondo (an untouched form of Andalusian folk music, a vocal style in flamenco) originated. The points of this triangle are Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, and Triana in Seville, and it is believed that this area of land is where flamenco began.

Begin your flamenco experience with a visit to the Flamenco Dance Museum. Museo del Baile Flamenco, offers a window into the magic world of flamenco dancing. This school and museum is managed by the famous Flamenco genius of Sevillana flamenco dance - Cristina Hoyos. The unique exhibition should not be missed by those who want to learn more about Andalusian culture and who want to understand, and emotionally experience, flamenco dancing.

Upon arrival you will be welcomed by the museum director who will guide you around Cristina Hoyos’ museum. The Museum itself is spread over three floors of an 18th century palace and makes a noble effort to showcase this mysterious art with sketches, paintings and photos of past and contemporary flamenco greats, plus a collection of dresses and shawls.

After uncovering the evolution and wonders of flamenco, a bailaora (flamenco dancer) from the Flamenco School will give you some basic tips about how to move, clap and dance Flamenco.

Finally, let yourself go during the fantastic show in the courtyard. Enjoy a stunning display of flamenco dance from the professionals, take in the sultry techniques and appreciate the accompanying folk music.

For those who will enjoy watching traditional flamenco dancing in its Spanish home, this is the tour for you!

The company El Patio Sevillano dates back to 1952, when the Cortijo El Guajiro – pioneering tablao flamenco in Spain – was created. Great flamenco figures such as Trini España, Matilde Coral, El Farruco, Manuela Vargas and Rafael Negro started their artistic careers here. Politicians and artistic and film celebrities, as well as great bullfighters like Belmonte and El Gallo visited the renowned premises.

In 1956 El Patio Andaluz, on Plaza del Duque, was opened in the heart of the historic centre. The best artists of the time continued performing at the venue and in 1973, keeping the same name, the tablao moved to the bank of the Guadalquivir River, opposite the Triana quarter. Next to the bullring - Real Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza - and surrounded by spectacular monuments such as Torre del Oro and Puente de Triana (Golden Tower and Triana Bridge) it continues the flamenco traditions to this day. For over 50 years the stage has been the launch platform for many flamenco stars and you may be watching top flamenco stars of the future.

This unique and very personal experience will surely be one of the highlights of your cruise.

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is the religious festival celebrated throughout Spain in the week leading to Easter. The week consists of processions, telling the story of Easter, with pasos (floats) carried through the streets by teams of costaleros (bearers). The Sevillanos will have a favourite procession – often depending on whether they are members of the church, maybe a family member is part of the procession, the church is in their district or the time of night or day it takes place can all be reasons not to miss it.

Leaving the quayside your tour starts with a panoramic drive of the city, admiring the pretty streets along the Guadalquivir River. Upon arrival in the city centre you will start your walk through the Jewish quarter - Barrio de Santa Cruz. Its narrow streets and charming patios will remind you of both jewish and Arabic influences. Your guide will tell you about their own experiences of Holy Week and the various processions - find out where the best places to view the festivites are.

If time permits, some free time will be given, before reboarding the coach for a transfer to Plaza de España.
