Travelling in an open-air safari vehicle, you will traverse routes inaccessible to normal coaches. Admire the rural Dominican landscape which will unfold before you en route to your first destination; a company-owned town where sugar workers live. Here you will learn how this vital crop is harvested and processed. You'll also have the chance to taste freshly cut sugar cane right from the field.

Continuing on, stop at a typical Dominican home to enjoy a refreshment whilst learning more about the way of life on this island. Refreshed, you continue to tour the local countryside passing by a large variety of plantations including lemons, mangos, papayas, bananas, coffee and cacao.

TOUR NOTES:  This tour includes approximately one hour of moderate walking, in addition to any walking undertaken during the period of free time. Portions of the tour are over rough and bumpy roads. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users and guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their own level of fitness as three deep steps must be negotiated to enter and exit the safari truck. Light-weight clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests who wish to swim at the beach stop are advised to come wearing their swimming costume under casual clothes and do not forget your towel. Discover the colonial sites of Santo Domingo, the first capital of the New World, which was founded at the beginning of the 16th century.

A journey across the river will take you to the Columbus Lighthouse, an architectural wonder built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery and the last burial site of the Admiral Christopher Columbus. Continue in a westerly direction to the colonial area of Santo Domingo to admire the cobblestoned streets and the Spanish colonial architecture, passing glimpses of an impressive collection of 16th century buildings including palatial houses and majestic churches.

A photo stop will be made at the Columbus Alcazar, a striking palace where Don Diego Colon, viceroy of Santo Domingo and son of Christopher Columbus lived, before you continue by the oldest cathedral in the New World, Santa Maria la Menor – a fine example of Spanish renaissance architecture.

Your return route will be via Cultural Square, one of the most important cultural centres in Santo Domingo and home to four museums and the National Theatre.

We would like to point out that it is quite easy to tour Santo Domingo independently; however your tour does include the use of a coach and is accompanied by an English-speaking guide. Photo stops will be made wherever possible. Unfortunately there will not be toilet facilities onboard the coach and a toilet stop will not be made during this tour.
