Sandane, Norway

Introduction to Sandane, Norway

Located in Sogn og Fjordane county, Sandane is at the end of Gloppefjord about 20km south of Nordfjordeid.

Located at the end of the beautiful Gloppefjorden in Sogn og Fjordane county, the wonderfully unspoilt village of Sandane is a joy to explore. Best seen on foot or by bicycle, Sandane is the perfect place to relax, with lush greenery and pretty buildings that offer a glimpse of traditional Norway.

Sandane is also the perfect base from which to explore some of the other interesting attractions in the region. From here you can take a trip along the fjord to see the incredible landscapes, valleys and vast glaciers or visit the Selje Monastery, Nodfjord Folk Museum and Norwegian Glacier Museum.

The village is also perfectly placed for tours to the astonishing Jostedalsbreen National Park too. With approximately 310 square miles of glaciers and home to the largest glacier in Europe - the Jostedalsbreen - the park offers some of Norway's finest sights.

On this Norway cruise joining this tour will take us through the best of the fjordland scenery, with some of the highlights of the area included.

Our cruise tour starts with a visit to Nordfjord Folk Museum, which is located in Sandane. We will find approximately 40 preserved buildings, many of which are furnished in the style from when they were still in use in the 17th and 18th centuries. Another symbol of the past is Holvikjekta – a 100 year old, 60 foot long seagoing vessel which was one of the last of the traditional passenger and freight boats that sailed the coastline and fjord in the last century.

After the visit we continue along parts of the Gloppenfjord and through the very green Våtedalen (‘the wet valley’), a grazing site for sheep and goats. Shortly after, we reach the northern end of Jølster Lake which is the richest fishing lake on the west coast. Here, trout weighing up to 15 kilograms (33 pounds) are caught.

We continue along the so called Kjøsnesfjord – a long, narrow arm of the lake – before traversing the six kilometre (four mile) long tunnel which leads underneath the southern part of the mighty Jostedal Glacier, the largest on Europe’s mainland.

Arriving in Fjærland – a flat, lush valley surrounded by impressive mountains on three sides, facing the narrow Fjærlandsfjord – we shall visit the Norwegian Glacier Centre. Here we shall watch a fascinating widescreen film. We can then examine the artificial glacier on display, walk right under it, and even hear avalanches pass over our heads. There are simulated ice caves and crevasses and we can undertake small experiments with real glacier ice.

After this unusual experience, we will enjoy lunch in Skei, at the northern end of the spectacular Jølster Lake. On our way to Olden we will have a photo stop close to the Bøya Glacier, an arm of the Jostedal Glacier, stretching steeply down the mountainside. Reaching Utvik Mountain, we shall once more be able to take in the splendid scenery before returning to the quayside and our awaiting ship.

CRUISE TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking at the Museum, where there is sloping and gravelled ground, at the Glacier Centre and restaurant. Lunch will be buffet style with water included. Please note this tour operates from Sandane and returns to the ship in Olden.
