Introduction to Samana, Dominican Republic
Samana lies on the north-east coast of the Dominican Republic, part of the rugged island that Columbus named Hispaniola or 'Little Spain'
The City of Samana is arguably the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful. Its streets are lined with brightly coloured traditional houses and wonderful coconut palm trees that simply scream tropical paradise. Located on the northern coast of Samana Bay, the city’s coastline, with several white sand beaches and gloriously blue waters, is always popular with visitors.
Away from the city centre, there are beautiful mountain slopes to explore and the 160ft Rio Limon waterfall to discover. The nearby Los Haitises National Park - a protected virgin forest and popular ecotourism destination - is home to a variety of birds including Brown Pelicans, Magnificent Frigatbirds and Stygian Owls that live amongst the vast woodland.
Out to sea, pods of humpback whales are often close to the shore. Whale watching tours take place regularly and offer visitors a once in a life time experience.
