Introduction to Rosendal, Norway
Tucked away between majestic mountains and rolling valleys at the very heart of the Hardangerfjord, picturesque Rosendal presents postcard-perfect sights from the moment you step ashore. Venture further inland and there’s much more to discover close-by too, including tumbling waterfalls and spectacular glaciers.
A visit to Rosendal is always memorable, not least because of the unforgettable journey you have to make to get here aboard your smaller cruise ship, gliding along the simply stunning Hardangerfjord – Norway’s second longest fjord.
Once ashore there are a few highlights to discover in the pretty village, including the 13th century Kvinnherad Church; interesting Shipbuilding Museum, found down by the harbour; and the only Barony in Norway. Sat atop a hill overlooking the village, the Barony is a small castle which dates back to 1665. Today it’s an interesting museum featuring a collection of tapestries, literature and porcelain, and an enchanting Renaissance rose garden.
While Rosendal itself is a wonderful place to while away a few hours, the incredible scenery here is sure to tempt you to venture further inland and explore beyond the imposing mountain peaks and unspoilt valleys surrounding the village. Those that opt to go in search of yet more breathtaking sights won’t be disappointed, as stunning natural wonders are within easy reach. Folgefonna National Park is simply not-to-be-missed; a wonderland of ice-sculpted landscapes and glaciers – including Norway’s third largest glacier, the Folgefonna – presenting photo opportunities galore. The Bondhusbrea Glacier and Furebergfossen Waterfall are among many astonishing sights that can be discovered slightly further afield too.
