Introduction to Road Town, Tortola

Tortola was a famous pirate haunt of old, and still retains a surreal, beguiling charm. The capital, Road Town, is typically old-world Caribbean and home to the legendary Pussers Bar, the perfect place to try some authentic Caribbean rum. Nearby Cane Garden Bay is a great place to unwind, with its vast expanse of sugar-white sands.

Road Town - the capital of the British Virgin Islands - is a picturesque town sat between vast, rolling hills and a beautiful bay. Rich with history as well as scenic beauty, Road Town is home to the Sunday Morning Well, the site where the Emancipation Proclamation was read in 1834.

In the town centre there are plenty of places to visit. Among the old buildings of Main Street – some still complete with their original red tin roofs – you will find shops stacked with local produce and an abundance of restaurants. Away from the town, there are more local treats to be found along the waterfront, where the town’s craftsmen and women sell their own textiles, paintings, rugs and ornaments, the perfect place to buy a holiday present for those back home.

Explore the island even further and you'll discover two of Tortola's most popular attractions. The J.R O'Neal Botanic Gardens - home to various exotic plant species - are one of Road Town's most beautiful places to visit, while the nearby 'baths' - reached via a short boat trip - are described by many as the most impressive natural rock formations on earth and are not-to-be-missed.
