To crown the growing spectrum of Rio Carnival Balls, it was the city’s most prestigious venue, Copacabana Palace Hotel, which elevated the Balls to their zenith and attracting the international attention. Still today the Copacabana Palace Ball remains at the epicentre of the Rio Carnival, reminiscent of the glamourous golden age of Rio. The glamour quotient of the evening is at an all-time high with a host of local and international celebrities in attendance. Men dress in their finest tuxedoes and women flaunt elegant gala dresses, however to truly experience the flavour of the evening, a luxury costume is certainly the way to go, with the fanciful, whimsical outfits adding to the glittering carnival atmosphere!

The entire Copacabana Palace Hotel is transformed into a magical wonderland with mystical themes adding to the atmosphere. This leisurely tour combines a drive past the most famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro and a trip up to Corcovado Mountain – home to its most famous monument, the Statue of Christ – for a bird’s eye view of this beautiful city.

Arriving at Cosme Velho, leave your coach for an approximate 20 minute ride on the funicular railway up to Corcovado. As the funicular climbs what is also known as Hunchback Mountain, enjoy spectacular views of Rio and the dense vegetation of the forest. Comprising an area of 47 square miles, this once dense tropical forest was cut down in the 19th century to accommodate coffee plantations. A project of reforestation was initiated in the late 1800s with the planting of more than 100,000 trees. Today the park is a popular spot to escape the city’s hustle and bustle.

Crowning the mountain at 730 metres (2,400 feet) above sea level is the captivating statue of Christ the Redeemer, standing more than 30 metres (98 feet) high. The Redeemer’s outstretched arms welcome visitors, who are spellbound by the magic of the mighty statue shining down on Rio.

Descend the mountain via the funicular railway and re-board your tour coach for a drive past the famous beaches of Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana, where the sight of sparkling sand, lined by mosaic sidewalks, will provide an unforgettable memory.

Discover the main sights of Rio as your tour introduces you to one of the most famous cities in the world.

Begin with a drive through the downtown district and residential areas en route to Copacabana – Rio’s celebrated curved beach, which is backed by skyscraper hotels and apartments. Located between mountain and sea, this high-density narrow strip of land is a must-see. Drive along Avenida Atlantica, which is known for its mosaic sidewalks, designed by Burle Marx to represent images of rolling waves. Rio’s sociable beach scene is a sight to behold and offers living proof of the Carioca fondness for life.

Next travel to Praia Vermelha, where the sea level cable car station is located. The iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, or Pão de Açucar, rises as a massive granite cone at the entrance of Guanabara Bay. Board the cable car for the ascent, which is made in two stages. It takes three minutes to get to the 650 metre (2,132 feet) Urca Hill, where shops and restaurants exist in shady gardens. The second stage involves a breathtaking ride to the 1,200 metre (3,937 feet) summit. On a clear day it is possible to admire stunning panoramas from this vantage point. Built around the edge of Brazilian cities, favelas are Brazil’s equivalent to shanty towns, many of which have created their own organisations and have become their own small communities over time. The purpose of this tour is to educate visitors to Brazil and allow for a better understanding of Brazilian life inside a favela.

Rio consists of 500 different favelas and, with approximately 20 percent of the city’s population living in these towns, the socio-economic differences between the favelas and the city of Rio are very apparent.

On this tour, your guide will take you to the hillside favela of Rocinha, the largest in Brazil, with around 60,000 dwellers. The introduction of the Rio Top Tour Project has allowed locals to graduate as tour guides and today they are proud to show off where they live.

Upon arrival, you will walk through the streets of the Rocinha as your local guide tells you stories of how the area emerged. During your time here, you will also visit the house of a local for an intimate view of what life is really like inside today’s favelas.

If you have been to Rio before or are looking to venture somewhere further afield, why not explore the historic town of Petropolis.
