Depart the quayside and drive along the National Highway towards Mtubatuba, and then continue north to Dumazulu, which means “Thundering Zulu”. Explore the culture and traditions of the Zulu tribe during a unique and informative visit to Dumazulu Traditional Village.

The Dumazulu Traditional Village is home to more than 50 Zulu residents which form part of a living museum. It is the largest Zulu village of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and the only Zulu village to be opened up to tourism by King Goodwill Zwelithini, who placed the Royal Zulu stamp of approval on the objectives and authenticity of Dumazulu.

Upon arrival, you will be introduced to your guides, who will invite you into the chief’s homestead, or kraal. Proclaimed the oldest game reserve in Africa, Hluhluwe Game Reserve is a wonderful place and has so much to offer. With the Big Five, wild dogs and cheetahs, there is never a dull moment here!

Depart the quayside and travel in a northerly direction along the national road. Your journey ends upon arrival at Memorial Gate, where a short comfort stop will be made before embarking the open vehicles. From here, your unforgettable adventure tour in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve begins.

The reserve preserves not only the wildlife of Zululand, but also something of an indefinable charm and tradition of the natural surroundings. This is truly one of the most fascinating parts of Africa.

The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve has become well-known for its small population of the rare, white rhinos. In addition to rhino, the reserve has a spectacular variety of bird and animal life, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, blue wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, mountain reedbucks, kudus and warthogs.

During your two-hour game drive, you may have the opportunity to encounter many of these beautiful animals up close.

Listed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in December 1999, iSimangaliso Wetland Park was awarded this title as recognition of its superlative natural beauty and unique global values. A stunning setting for a boat trip of discovery!

Your tour begins with a drive north to the beautiful iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site.

Upon arrival in St Lucia Town, you will embark your boat for a leisurely two-hour cruise on Lake St Lucia. The vessel travels at walking speed all along the shoreline of the St Lucia Estuary, and your enthusiastic skipper will tell you more about the hippos and Nile crocodiles that inhabit St Lucia. The lake has the largest concentration of hippos in South Africa. It is home to approximately 2,000 Nile crocodiles, 800 hippos and approximately 526 different kinds of bird species, of which a favourite is the African fish eagle and the mangrove kingfisher.

Intermittent stops at sightings will ensure that you are allowed to get good photographic opportunities and you are almost guaranteed to at least see plenty of hippo throughout this trip from up close.

Upon return from your boat cruise, make the return drive to Richards Bay.

A solid wooden gangplank will need to be negotiated in order to board the boat - handrails are not present on the gangplank.  All guests are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and sun protection; the lower deck on the boat is covered, however the upper deck is open. The drive from the ship to iSimangaliso Wetland Park is approximately one-and-a-half hours in each direction. The boat does not have running water, however wet wipes are provided and the boat is not booked exclusively for Fred Olsen guests. We cannot guarantee what wildlife will be seen, and no refund will be given should a sighting not occur.

Zulu Nyala Private Game Reserve provides a unique and tantalising taste of the African bush, in the heart of one of South Africa’s most diverse conservation regions. This small section of paradise is home to a wide variety of game, from majestic elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard to abundant plains game and over 400 species of birdlife.

Heading in a northerly direction towards Hluhluwe you will make your way to the Zulu Nyala Private Game Reserve. On arrival at the lodge, board the 4 wheel drive open vehicles and embark on a game drive through the bush. During your game drive the ranger will point out a wide variety of game.

On completion of your game drive, enjoy a finger buffet and drinks at the open-air “boma” (weather dependent) at the Zulu Nyala Heritage Hotel, before re-boarding the vehicles for your return transfer to Richards Bay.

Lake St Lucia, situated on the Elephant Coast of South Africa is part of a World Heritage Site to protect the diversity of flora, fauna and natural systems which make this area a unique gem in the Maputuland crown and this is where you can experience nature like never before!

Departing from the pier, you will head north to the beautiful iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. On arrival, and after being kitted out, take a relaxed paddle in the popular Honeymoon Bend route on Lake St. Lucia. Kayaking on the estuary portion of Lake St Lucia with Hippos and Crocs at a safe distance is a great way to view water birds and get down to the mangrove roots level. Mudskippers, fiddler crabs, whelks and fossil oyster beds are all part of the kayaking experience.

Leopard Mountain is a Big 5 multiple award winning 4 Star lodge, set within an Endangered Species Protected Area offering peace and tranquillity. The beautiful lodge has the most spectacular views in Zululand, from the river meandering below to the distant Lebombo Mountains. Day 1 – Richards Bay – Leopard Mountain Lodge

Departing from Richards Bay Harbour you will travel the approximate three hour drive to Leopard Mountain Game Lodge. Leopard Mountain Game Lodge has nine well equipped stone chalets with a hammock and private plunge pool on its own private balcony, nestled in the cliff tops overlooking the river below. Each chalet is light and spacious with mini bar, tea and coffee facilities, mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms. On arrival at the main entrance gate you will be met by game rangers who will transfer you to your lodge in a 4-wheel drive open vehicles.

After check-in and time to unpack, high tea will be served before departing for a late afternoon game drive in 4x4 open vehicles. Sundowners and a light snack will be served at a clearing in the bush following your game drive with the possibility of viewing several nocturnal wildlife species after the sun goes down.

On your return to the lodge, time to freshen up will be afforded before dinner is served and the rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 2 – Leopard Mountain Lodge – Richards Bay

Your day will begin with an early morning game drive in your 4x4 vehicles, accompanied by your rangers, but the early wake-up call will hopefully be well worth it. Listen out for the soft bush sounds surrounding your lodge as dawn breaks. The opportunity to view the Big 5 at this time of the day is very good as the temperature is still cool and the animals are still very active, including the big cats, which will be returning from a night of hunting!

On your return to the lodge, breakfast will be served before check-out and transfer to the gate where you will board your vehicle for the return journey to Richards Bay and Boudicca.

Phinda Private Game Reserve is situated in the lush Maputaland region in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Bordering the Great St Lucia Wetland Park – a World Heritage Site – Phinda comprises of 17,500 hectares (43,240 acres) of prime conservation land. Seven distinct habitats shelter an abundance of wildlife including Africa’s Big Five and over 380 bird species so be prepared to experience some unforgettable game-viewing!

Day 1 – Richards Bay – Phinda Private Game Reserve

Depart from Richards Bay and travel approximately three hours to the Phinda Private Game Reserve. Phinda Mountain Lodge has 25 spectacular suites, each with their own veranda and positioned to ensure complete privacy. Each suite has an outdoor shower and plunge pool, allowing you to savour the outdoors and the fresh mountain air. Additional facilities include an African crafts shop, an open-air boma, a shaded swimming pool and look-out deck.

On arrival at the main entrance gate, you will be met by game rangers who will transfer you to your lodge in a 4-wheel drive open vehicle. Once at the lodge, time to enjoy lunch will be afforded before checking in. After time to relax afternoon tea will be served before departing on a late afternoon game drive in search of Africa’s Big Five.

Due to the location of Phinda, it offers a variety of landscape and vegetation that shelters an abundance of wildlife, including not only the Big 5 but many rare and less easily spotted species, such as the elusive Cheetah or the scarce black rhino. Although you may have received a very early morning wake up call, it will hopefully be worth it as the inhabitants of this area make the most of the cooler part of the day.

On your return to the lodge, breakfast will be served after which you will check-out and transfer to the gate where you will board your vehicle for the return journey to Richards Bay and Boudicca.
