Discover the former capital city of the Azores and its historic centre, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A drive to Serra do Cume will offer you some impressive views over Lagos and the sea. Enjoy a brief stop at the Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz, the largest volcanic crater in the archipelago, with a perimeter of nine miles. Located on the south coast of the island, Monte Brasil is an extinct volcano, which emerged from the sea during an early underwater eruption. A stop here offers a great opportunity for you to capture the striking views over the Atlantic and the city of Angra.

Continuing to the city centre, you will visit the Duke’s Garden and the Gothic-inspired Church of Sé, dating back to the 16th century. Your return journey will take you through the enchanting villages of Ribeirinha and São Sebastião.

Gain an insight into the islands beautiful southern countryside as well as spending time exploring  Algar do Carvão, an ancient volcanic vent located in the centre of the island.

Your journey will take you through some of the most beautiful areas of the island’s interior, before arriving at Algar do Carvão, one of the island’s geological nature reserves. The name, which means coal pit refers to the walls of the cave which are formed from dark black lava.

Upon arrival you will descend the steps down the volcanic chimney into the cavern, where you will be invited to admire the stalagmites, stalactites and the crystal clear lake at the bottom.

With your visit to Algar do Carvão concluded, you rejoin your tour vehicle for a drive to Guilherme Moniz cauldron, the largest volcanic crater in the archipelago, before venturing onto the Serra do Cume viewpoint. Here you can enjoy the beautiful vistas of the azores before you make the scenic return drive to Praia da Vitória.

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU? Please note that this tour will involve approximately one hour of both walking and standing, there will be approximately 200 steps to negotiate within the cave, which may be slippery when wet. For your reference, you will spend approximately 50 minutes within the cave. We do not recommend this tour to guests who suffer from heart conditions or claustrophobia. Flat, non-slip walking shoes and a light jacket are advisable.

Named after the island’s last major volcanic eruption in 1761, the Misterios Negros (Black Mysteries) trail route will lead you through some of the islands varied vegetation for a true insight into the islands beauty.

Your walking tour will begin at Gruta do Natal, the Christmas caves, and leads you on a circular route full of endemic flora. You will walk through meadowland, along narrow paths and through a wood of scots heather before reaching an enchanting forest of Japanese Cedar. Once clear of the forest, Pico Gaspar will come into view, an imposing geological formation with a crater rich in vegetation that is just waiting to be explored!

Is this tour right for you?

IS THIS TOUR RIGH FOR YOU? Guests will be walking for approximately two and a half hours over varying terrains, some of which may be inclined. At the Pico Gaspar there may be large boulders to negotiate to reach the crater. This trail route is considered strenuous and is therefore not recommended to guests with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Flat, comfortable walking shoes with a good tread will be required. Depending upon weather conditions the trail may be wet and slippery in place. A bottle of water would be a handy addition to your bag.
