Ponta Delgada, Azores

Ponta Delgada, Azores

Introduction to Ponta Delgada, Azores

Ponta Delgada – the main town on the island of São Miguel – has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and a fine selection of parks, narrow cobbled streets and squares, a modern marina and waterside cafés. The surrounding island boasts beautiful lakes, magnificent mountains, sandy beaches and lush valleys, as well as the stunning crater lakes of the extinct Sete Cidades volcano.

The main town on the island of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada, has a very cosmopolitan atmosphere despite it dating back over an incredible 500 years. It has many fine buildings – a reminder that this was once an important staging post between Europe and the Americas. Intermingled are parks, enchanting squares, a modern marina, restaurants and waterside cafés.

There are white washed houses with terracotta rooves and pretty villages that line the lakes edge, looking out to the enchanting mountain plains. Be sure to potter around the market stalls and cafes as locals ride bicycles and vespers in and out of the cobbled streets.

Portas da Cidade, the City Gates, once stood in front of the harbour and are now in Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square, dedicated to the Portuguese navigator who discovered the Azores. There is an interesting church here – Igreja Matriz – with a splendid clock tower, one of many beautifully ornate towers that can be spotted around the town.

PONTA DELGADA - INFORMATION

Must do tour

Since their discovery in the early 15th century, the Portuguese Azores have played an important part in oceanic navigation. They were a logistical point for the discovery of new worlds, a port of call for ships engaged in trade between Europe, America and India, and a place to lay anchor for the galleons bringing the wealth of the Americas back to the Old World.

The Azores, located 1,450 kilometres (900 miles) from the coast of Portugal and 3,200 kilometres (2,000 miles) from America, became a bastion of Portuguese power, protecting lines of communications to its newly discovered lands. The Azores became known as the ‘gem in the Atlantic’ for ocean travellers.

The nine islands of the Azores are spread over some 600 kilometres (370 miles) of ocean and represent the European Union’s remotest outpost. The islands separate into three groups. São Miguel is part of the Eastern Group, and is home to Ponta Delgada. Whilst in port at this stunning location why not take the Crater Lakes Scenic Drive (Tour G) where the scenery is very picturesque.

The official currency of the Azores is the Euro

The entire region of Sete Cidades is dominated by the impressive Caldeira of Sete Cidades which, with its 13 kilometre (eight mile) diameter crater, is the most spectacular volcanic scene in the Azores. Under the Miradouro da Vista do Rei from which King Charles I of Portugal contemplated this impressive panorama in 1901, there lay two volcanic lakes, the Green and the Blue Lake, separated by a narrow bridge. Together the two lakes have an area of 482 hectares, and they are 19 metres (62 feet) deep at their greatest depth.

On the shores of the Blue Lake is the village of Sete Cidades which is surrounded by the dark forest covered walls of the caldeira. On this tour you will have the opportunity to see the lakes not only from the highest point but also to admire them at close quarters. On the way back to Ponta Delgada you will also have the opportunity to view the Santiago Lake, which is unique in its style due to its distinctive colour.

Via the coastal road, pass through a number of picturesque villages before arriving at Feteiras. From here the route ascends towards Sete Cidades, an extinct volcano some 575 metres above sea level. From the edge of the crater, 13 kilometres in circumference, there is a magnificent view of the two lakes at the bottom. One is blue, reflecting the sky, and the other is bright green due to the beautiful rich vegetation that surrounds it. Time here will allow you to capture these magical sights on film.

Continuing, visit the António Borges Botanical Garden; located in the centre of Ponta Delgada, this garden is famous for its remarkable collection of European and tropical trees. Enjoy a walk through the gardens to admire the picturesque flora, then, continuing to the suburb of Abelheira, a stop is made at a pineapple plantation, where the complete process of cultivation and marketing of this fruit is explained.
