Introduction to Perth, Australia
Perth, the one-time convict settlement never looked back after the discovery of gold at nearby Kalgoorlie in 1893! Today the state capital of Western Australia is the world’s remotest city - Adelaide lies 1,700 miles away - as well as Australia’s sunniest.
This is 21st century Australia at its most extrovert, with a dynamic skyline, ‘Pacific Rim’ restaurants of every ethnic origin in cosmopolitan Northbridge and nearby Fremantle (the city’s superbly restored Victorian port), immaculate gardens and parkland – and 20 miles of Indian Ocean ‘Sunset Coast’ beaches. Northwards is the Nambung National Park and its Pinnacles Desert, where ancient limestone pillars rise from the sand dunes.
