Parintins, Brazil

Introduction to Parintins

Experience the little Indian village of Parintins.

Parintins is on an island in the Amazon River – and the site of the annual Boi Bumba folk festival, the biggest in Brazil after Carnival in Rio. The port area has a flea market and a colourful floating market with dozens of boats jammed together, selling fruit, vegetables, fish and souvenirs. The town itself has a few interesting buildings, including a brightly painted cathedral in Portuguese colonial style, with an ornate interior.

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU? For your reference, the tender from your ship to the port will be by a river boat provided by the port agent. Whilst this tour involves minimal walking, there will be a short walk of approximately 80 metres (260 feet) from the regional boat to the tour buses. Please note that due to the limited transport available to us, there may be a short wait for your transfer to and from the arena. Everybody has heard of the Rio Carnival, however Brazil’s second biggest festival is an annual event that takes place within the Amazon basin. The history of the Boi Bumba festival dates back to over a century and every year the festival week represents a culmination of months of work as the people of Parintins put on a folkloric pantomime retelling the story of the Ox that was brought back to life.

Boarding a minibus you proceed towards the Caprichoso Pavilion for a short external view of one of the Boi Bumba practice grounds. You then pass through the residential area of Parintins before heading into the centre of town. En route, your guide will point out the homes with their facades painted in blue or red, according to the owners’ preferences to the two bulls - Caprichoso or Garantido.

Shortly after passing through the town centre, a stop will be made at the Bumbodromo, the city’s premier arena and the home of the annual worldwide famous event, the Boi Bumba Festival. Officially named the Cultural and Sports Centre, the arena’s structure is even designed in the shape of a bull’s head! Only 35,000 people can fit in the seats and tickets are the community’s most cherished commodities!

Following your internal visit of the Bumbodromo, you return to your mini coach and traverse the central commercial area where you have a brief pause at the new Cathedral with its impressive tower. Continuing, you head to the Garantido Pavilion where you can explore on foot the flourishing warehouse, which is home to the famous giant puppets, gears and beautiful costumes used during the annual festival. As you browse at leisure through these amazing pieces of art, your guide will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
