Palma, Mallorca

Introduction to Palma, Mallorca

Palma is the cosmopolitan capital of Mallorca, the most popular of the Balearic Islands (if not the entire Mediterranean)

With its array of bars & restaurants, stylish shops, palm-lined beaches and charming Old Town, Palma – Mallorca’s largest city – is one of the Balearic’s finest destinations. Surrounded by vast mountains and crystal clear waters, Palma is also one of the most beautiful.

An historic city, Palma’s greatest attractions – aside from the stretches of glorious white sands – are the number of historic buildings and monuments that are dotted around the city. The imposing gothic cathedral and the magnificent 14th century Bellver castle in particular are absolute must-visit sites, boasting stunning architecture and interesting exhibits that tell tales of Palma’s vast history, while the charming narrow streets, large squares and 18th century stone walls of the Old Town district are a joy to explore.

This tour is a perfect introduction to the city of Palma to view the city’s main attractions and stop in the heart of the Gothic quarter.

Your scenic drive takes you to Bellver Castle; this unusual, round castle dominates Palma and the harbour and was once an important military stronghold. Straddling a wooded hillside, this Castle is from the 14th-century and has a unique round tower, the only one of its kind in Spain. King Jaume II ordered the castle to be built atop a hill known as Puig de Sa Mesquida in 1300 and it was largely complete 10 years later. You will enjoy a visit around the castle and admire the spectacular views over the woods to Palma, the Badia de Palma and out to sea.

Next, you head towards the city centre for an extended walk through the town. Slip away from the crowds that swarm around the trophy sights for just a minute and you will find yourself deep in a labyrinth of cobbled lanes, which call for serendipitous strolls. Take your lead from the locals and wander here at ease, pausing for market banter, boutique finds, snapshots of baroque churches, palaces and patrician courtyards.

On your return drive, pass by the Almudaina Palace a typical ancient residence of the Moorish king. The Palace was later the Royal House for the King and Queen of Mallorca.

In a not-so-distant past, the city we are familiar with today was a network of narrow alleys, and nooks and crannies, with a constant bustling of people who shared their everyday life with one another. The ‘patios’ were intricately linked to the urban side of Palma; spaces the inhabitants of the capital moved around, which were an extension of the streets of its historic city centre.

This tour will take you to the old town, where a walking tour will allow you to discover the most beautiful palaces and courtyards. Palma old town was divided into different neighbourhoods. Upper Palma was, traditionally, the rich part of the city and you will be amazed by the beauty of these palaces where nobles and rich Mallorcans were living, mainly during wintertime. Great architecture and narrow alleys with lots of photo opportunities await, while you discover the way of living and traditions of this period.

Having worked up an appetite, enjoy a taste of the local gastronomy - visiting a popular tapas bar to enjoy two typical tapas and a drink. After this light refreshment, you will then go on to discover Lower Palma.

This was the neighbourhood where pirates, poor people and fishermen were living. Learn about incredible pirate histories and, of course, the sailors’ neighbourhood with amazing constructions at La Lonja or Consulat del Mar.

You will have a general vision of ancient Palma, through its courtyards and traditions with some time at leisure included too to perhaps stroll into the shops, take some great photos or just relax and enjoy the area.
