Nassau, Bahamas

Introduction to Nassau

There’s something for everyone in Nassau, from stunning Cable Beach – with almost five kilometres of golden sand – to the wonderful views over the whole island from Fort Fincastle. Souvenir hunters will enjoy the Straw Market and for keen golfers, Paradise Island, linked to Nassau by two bridges, has a championship golf course.

The beauty of Nassau, other than its incredible sandy beaches, is that the city has something to suit all tastes. It’s white sands stretch over five miles and are accompanied by some incredible historic architecture, such as Fort Fincastle.

With their soft sand and warm, pure water, the beaches are the epitome of paradise. If fact, they are so breathtaking that movies such as Thunderball and Casino Royale were filmed here.

In the city centre there are many museums, galleries and exhibitions, where visitors can feast their eyes on a collection of Bahamian artefacts, documents, drawings and more. There is even a small museum dedicated to the history of Blackbeard and other famous pirates to explore, a unique Nassau experience. No matter what your idea of a perfect holiday is, a visit to this Bahamian paradise will be truly unforgettable.

After departing from the pier, you will soon pass several landmark buildings such as the House of Parliament and Supreme Court, while your knowledgeable driver guide regales you with details and anecdotes about the sights you will see. Soon you will arrive in the down town area of the city, where you can enjoy time at leisure for a spot of souvenir shopping!

As you walk along the winding paths, you will pass towering royal palms, tamarinds, Indian tulip trees, and West Indies mahoganies. Splashes of colour from flora such as yellow elders, ixoras and delicately scented frangipanis add to the atmosphere, leaving you with a great sense of tranquillity. Even so, there is plenty of excitement within the gardens and zoo.

Peacocks often strut by fanning their tail feathers, bright green iguanas cling to the tree branches above, and the March of the Flamingoes is a performance that never fails to entertain. Once nearly extinct, the Caribbean flamingo is now so popular, and has been associated with the Bahamas for so long, that it has become the national bird.

Before rejoining your bus for the transfer back to the pier, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a Bahamian lunch in a local restaurant.

NASSAU - INFORMATION

Nassau is the capital, largest city and commercial centre of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The city is located on the island of New Providence, which functions much like a business district. Nassau is the site of the House of Assembly and various judicial departments and was considered historically to be a stronghold of pirates.

Nassau’s growth began in the late 18th century with the influx of thousands of American loyalists and their slaves to the Bahamas following the American Revolutionary War. Many of them settled in Nassau and eventually came to outnumber the original inhabitants. Today the city dominates the entire island and its satellite, Paradise Island. What better way to explore and taste Nassau then to book The Charm & Beauty of Nassau tour (Tour A) which will allow you to appreciate all that this city has to offer.

The official currency of the Bahamas is the Bahamian Dollar

THE CHARM & BEAUTY OF NASSAU (TOUR A)

  • Discover some of the most beautiful areas of Nassau
  • Soak up the Bahamian atmosphere as you sample some local rums
Price£50.00 - £55.00
DurationApprox. 3 Hours
Walking level 1 - minimal or no walkingMinimal or no walking

Admire landmark after landmark on an all-encompassing driving tour of Nassau and Paradise Island, with stops at historical Fort Charlotte and the John Watlings Distillery.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a relaxing and informative driving tour past Nassau’s marquee attractions. The highlights include palm-dotted Rawson Square, lovely government buildings such as the Supreme Court and the pink-hued House of Assembly, and the mega-resort and theme park Atlantis on aptly-named Paradise Island.

Nassau is exceptionally photogenic, so it’s no wonder that parts of three James Bond films have been shot here, as well as the Beatles’ movie Help. Other iconic sights you will see during your drive include the Prime Minister’s residence, historical Graycliff Inn and Fort Charlotte, where you will pause for photos. Built in 1788, the Fort features a waterless moat, dungeons, underground passageways and dozens of cannons that have never been fired in an act of aggression.

Continuing on, you will also visit a beautiful 18th-century estate downtown that is now home to a distillery named after buccaneer John Watling. The small-batch rum produced here is said to capture Watling’s bold spirit of adventure. You can determine that firsthand by sampling the different rums, which range from pale blonde with a crisp dry finish to reddish-gold with a soft warming finish. Following the rum tasting, you will return to the pier.
