Narvik, Norway

Introduction to Narvik, Norway

Founded in 1903, Narvik is a relatively new city but still has an interesting history to explore. Located north of the Arctic Circle, the city's harbour is surprisingly ice-free, however, there are still a number of stunning Arctic sights to see, including the Narvikfjellet Mountain.

Although Narvik is over 400km north of the Arctic Circle, the harbour is ice-free and in use all year as a centre for exporting iron ore. Although the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, the town was not established until 1903 when the Ofoten railway was completed. The line is a tourist attraction in itself, running 42km through magnificent scenery to the Swedish border. For visitors who don’t have time, a cable car ride from the centre of town to the viewpoint on the Narvikfjellet mountain gives fabulous views over the Ofotfjord and surrounding area.

Close to the town centre is the Ofoten Museum, with displays of local history including 5,000-year-old rock carvings. The Nordland Red Cross War Memorial Museum commemorates the occupation of Narvik in the Second World War, which involved land, sea and air battles. Narvik Church is an interesting example of Scandinavian architecture, with a painted altar piece by Eilif Pettersen.

CITY TOUR & WAR LEGACY

  • Find out about the city in World War II
  • Visit the emotive War Cemetery and the Chapel of Peace
Price£45.00 - £55.00
DurationApprox. 3 hours
LimitationLimited capacity
Walking level 2 - moderate walkingModerate walking

Narvik is situated at the tip of the peninsula between the Rombak and Beis Fjords, surrounded by peaks such as Kongsbakktind, also called ‘The Sleeping Queen’. Your local guide will tell you the history, as you travel through the city rebuilt after the war and which owes its existence to the shipping of iron ore to its ice free port.

Travel from the port, up through the charming centre, which is graced with statues, on to the War Cemetery. For two months in 1940 a bitter battle for Narvik and the iron ore raged between the invading German forces and the French, Polish and Norwegian troops on land and a considerable British flotilla at sea. The battle meant the destructions of the iron ore shipping installations and of the town.

The Battle of Narvik was the first major victory gained by the Allies during World War II, thanks to the powerful support of the Royal Navy. Here, in the cemetery, soldiers from Britain, France, Poland, Germany and Norway are buried. You will also pay a visit to the Chapel of Peace.

The next stop is at the War Museum. The museum is divided into sections, illustrating chapters of the war with exhibits, models and photographs. The fascinating story is shown in chronological order and includes an original enigma machine.

Experience one of the world’s most beautiful journeys along the Ofoten Railway from Narvik in Norway to Riksgränsen in Sweden. This tour will offer you a memorable experience of setting foot in two countries in one day.

Narvik is a relatively young town. In 1883 a British/Swedish company was given permission to build a railway from Kiruna in Sweden to Narvik which was a small settlement at the head of the Ofotfjord. The town was renamed Victoria Havn after the wife of Sweden’s crown prince Gustaf. In 1902 it reassumed the name Narvik after the farm that formed the first village. That same year the railroad opened and the transportation of iron ore from Sweden began.

Described by the author Ernst Didring as “The Eighth Wonder of the World”, the Ofoten Railway is at a latitude of 68˚ north. When it was constructed it was the northernmost, coldest and harshest railway construction project the world had ever seen. Metre by metre, the route was carved out of the mountainside.

A few minutes after leaving Narvik, the line reaches the southern shores of Rombaksfjord, where it runs alongside vertical cliffs with magnificent panoramic views westwards. Pass deep fjords, rugged mountains and wild and barren plateaus which are all typical landscapes of the Arctic. On arrival at Riksgränsen in Sweden, you will have refreshments at the local hotel.

You then join a coach and commence the drive back to Narvik. Crossing the Swedish/Norwegian border you drive along the E10 - the Norwegian and Swedish kings opened this road in 1984 and at the border crossing a stone with their signatures on can be seen. This road used to be an old access road built during World War II by prisoners of war. You will see plenty of lakes, a wind farm and lots of cabins which are used as recreational retreats all year round.
