Miami, USA

Introduction to Miami

This electric city has many faces – and many sights to go with them. See the subtropical everglades by day, bustling with exotic wildlife, and when the sun goes down, take your pick of the lively bars and music venues South Beach has to offer.

Miami, Florida is one of the world’s most popular destinations and when you consider what the city has to offer, it is easy to understand why. Miami is bathed in sunshine throughout the year and benefits from a gorgeous tropical climate that provides year-round warmth. The city’s beautiful beaches are world renowned sunbathing spots and the nearby island of Key Biscayne attracts thousands of visitors from around the globe who come to study the surrounding barrier reef and unique underwater archaeological trail.

Miami isn’t just sunshine and beaches though; it’s a city bursting with charm, excitement and diverse culture. The Little Havana district – also known as the Latin Quarter – and Downtown Miami are prime examples of the city’s vast range of cultures. The Spanish-speaking neighbourhood of Little Havana seems a world away from the other areas of the city and the charming palm lined streets are packed with traditional Latin American stores and restaurants. In contrast, Downtown Miami offers a completely different experience. This busy commercial district is packed with modern skyscrapers that dominate the skyline and is where many of the city’s best parks, museums, shops and theatres are found.

Don't forget to visit Key Biscayne, an island town located south-east from the city centre. The town has a large number of beaches, beautiful parks and gorgeous turquoise waters. Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park are two of Florida’s most beautiful parks and both are located on Key Biscayne.

Discover Cuba in Miami which evokes the beauty offered by the Caribbean island to the world prior to 1960. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, aromas and flavours of Cuba.

At the pier, meet your traditionally dressed driver and guide for the transfer via Coral Way to Calle Ocho (Eighth Street) and the epicentre of the Cuban community in Miami. En route, pass the Freedom Tower, where numerous immigrants from Cuba were processed, and other landmarks such as the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat basketball team. Upon arrival to 17th and Calle Ocho you will be greeted by local guides, staff, musicians, and dancers adorned in the dress of the era.

Following the presentation of each guest with a Cuban “passport”, your exploration begins. Step inside the Futurama 1637 Galleries and witness artists in residence painting Cuban or Cuban-influenced art. Next, walk to the historic Ball & Chain Bar & Lounge to hear its storied past, and enjoy typical Cuban sounds provided by a live band. Dancing is encouraged and staff members are on hand to teach you how. Out on the terrace, you can enjoy stand-up luncheon of Cuban specialities. A Cuban roast pig (Lechon) will be cooking in an open grill and Arroz con Pollo (chicken and rice – a staple of Sunday dinner) will be offered by a local chef using the finest ingredients. The Lechon is served as sandwiches and accompanied by sodas or water. Also on the terrace are a few select vendors offering Cuban souvenirs including a set of dominoes, branded t-shirts, art in different mediums, cigars, and much more. Refreshed and fortified, you depart for the CubaOcho centre.

The CubaOcho Art and Research Centre holds museum quality art and an extensive library including important collections created between 1850 and 1958 by various Cuban Masters. Your visit here will be lively, as music and a “cafecito Cubano” (Cuban coffee) accompany your discovery, followed by shopping for prints while hosts in folkloric attire demonstrate various dance steps.

Continuing, move on to Domino Park and witness this intensely passionate game among the locals. Next, step inside the historic Tower Theatre which opened in 1926 and is one of Florida’s oldest cultural landmarks. Take a moment to appreciate its Art Deco interior and even watch a few minutes of film from the University of Miami archives.

At the Little Havana Cigar Company, listen to the history of cigar making and watch a skilful craftsman roll one by hand before stepping next door to the Azucar Ice Cream Company to taste artisanal gourmet ice creams and sorbets. After savouring the Cuban tropical flavours, re-board your coach for the transfer back to your awaiting ship.

Departing the pier you will pass through the port of Miami, the Cruise Capital of the World, and past the Freedom Tower where thousands of Cuban refugees were processed in the 1960s and early 1970s. As you enter the heart of the city, you will see the Miami Arena, home of the Miami Heat, and Bayside Market Place, an active open-air mall overlooking Biscayne Bay. Following the route of the Orange Bowl Parade, you make your way to Brickell Avenue, Miami’s financial and commercial district and onto the eclectic village of Coconut Grove known, for its fine restaurants, quaint cafes and fabulous shopping.

Continuing west, enjoy a scenic drive through the peaceful, tree-lined streets of Coral Gables, an exclusive historic community in which developer and visionary George Merrick created unique themed villages including American Colonial, French, Dutch, South African, Italian and Chinese. Be sure to have your camera ready as you pass a number of architectural treasures such as the Biltmore Hotel, The Colonnade and City Hall. Proceeding through the heart of the Cuban community of Little Havana you will make your way across the Causeway to Virginia Key and the Rusty Pelican restaurant.

After a multi-million-dollar refurbishment in 2011, this Virginia Key landmark dating back to 1972 now boasts a very contemporary feel and sophisticated surf-and-turf menu from new chef Jim Pastor, a veteran of the W Hotel in South Beach. But one thing that hasn’t changed, which makes dining here a sure-fire memory-maker: the million-dollar view over Biscayne Bay. Birds (pelicans included) swoop by, local scullers and kayakers slice through the water just feet away, and behind it all in the distance is downtown Miami’s high-rise skyline. You will arrive here just as the sun is setting, offering a back-lit outline of the modern building that transitions into a brilliant skyline of colourfully-illuminated buildings; the perfect backdrop for an incredible dinner.

Following your meal, a short panoramic transfer returns you to the pier.
