Melilla, Spanish-Morocco

Introduction to Melilla, Spanish Morocco

A Spanish city located on the north coast of Africa, with the Mediterranean Sea on one side, and Morocco surrounding the rest; Melilla is a haven for those in search of stunning architecture and history, and is home to a medieval fortress and many interesting museums.

Carved out of the Moroccan coastline, Melilla has both an old town - containing a 14th century fortress, which juts out into the sea, caves and numerous museums; and the 'new town', full of Modernist buildings - the second-largest collection outside of Barcelona. The centre is the long triangular Parque Hernández, well worth exploring, and the sandy beaches are ideal for relaxing on. Tax is lower here than on the mainland, and it is one of the last places in Spain to still provide free tapas with every drink in all its bars.

You will begin at the Beni-ensar border where you will reach the Rostrogordo viewpoint, located on the Esplanade of Rostrogordo. Here you will find the impressive medieval fort which is used as a military fortress.

Next, you proceed back to the centre of Melilla, where you can admire the Plaza de España Square/Square of Spain, Spanish Army Street and the Polygon Mosque. As you drive past these landmarks, you will see the parallels between 21st century Melilla and its neighbours, Morocco.

Your tour continues to the Old Town, where you will discover the city's oldest and most historic quarter on foot. In the walled quarter of the city, you will find the typical characteristics of a medieval village. Its cobbled, narrow and steep streets will take you back to the splendors of the Spanish Empire, where Jews, Christians, Hindus and Muslims have left their traces.
