Manaus, Brazil

Introduction to Manaus

Manaus, ‘Paris of the Jungle’, is the capital of Brazil’s state of Amazonas.

Manaus is the Amazon’s largest city, resting along the left bank of the Rio Negro, which merges with the mighty, muddy Amazon. It has become an ideal starting or finishing point for visitors to the mid-Amazon region. Riverboats journey through the myriad of tributaries, estuaries and small creeks, where rich wildlife may be seen.

Venture into the flooded forest, in the depths of darkness, in search of the glinting eyes of the caiman!

Departing at dusk you travel by riverboat to January Lake, where you will transfer to a small motorised canoe. Under the expert direction of your native guide, you will glide silently into the flooded forest and its countless overgrown tributaries. Armed only with a flashlight, your guide will attempt to locate caimans by startling them with the light.

While the caiman is hypnotised by the bright light, you slowly approach it until your guide is close enough to attempt to catch it with his bare hands and actually lift it out of the water for all to see. When you have taken photographs, the young caiman will be returned, unharmed, to the water.

After the thrill of this incredible hunt, you transfer back to the riverboat for your return to Manaus.

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU? Please note that although this tour covers the same area as Tour A (Amazon River Cruise), it provides guests with the opportunity to spot caimans and nocturnal wildlife. There is very little walking involved in this tour, but it is essential for guests to be able to get on and off the riverboat (via a gangplank) and step into the motorised canoe (the transfer to the canoe may take place mid-stream.) Mineral water and caipirinha (a Brazilian cocktail) will be available to guests throughout the tour. Please note that there are ten wooden steps to negotiate should you wish to be seated on the upper level of the riverboat. For your reference, the upper level of the riverboat is only half covered. Not all canoes will be guided but this will not deter from the enjoyment of the tour. Please note that there is a 99% chance that you will see a caiman on this tour, but even if luck is not on your side, the sounds of the rainforest in the darkness makes it quite an experience. A tour with a difference!

Travel to the ‘Meeting of the Waters’, where the muddy yellow water of the mighty Solimões and the clear, dark water of the Rio Negro meet and continue to flow together without intermingling for miles before forming the Amazon River – an intriguing phenomenon!

Here, you will be invited to venture into the jungle along a wooden walkway to admire the Victoria Regia water lilies (river conditions permitting), whose leaves can measure up to one metre across. An overnight stay is an excellent chance to experience the rainforest firsthand and almost certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity! You are certain to discover two very different perspectives of the Amazon with activities allowing you to explore the rainforest by day and night; watch as the forest comes alive after dark and explore the beauty during the daytime sun.

This interesting tour allows you to have an exciting look at the magnificent Amazon rainforest. Join a rustic riverboat for your journey to the Ecopark Lodge, situated in the heart of the rainforest. The area surrounding the lodge is home to playful monkeys and elusive crocodiles – both of which you will hopefully be able to witness!

Your tour price includes transfers by regional boat, accommodation, all meals and sightseeing and is escorted by a local English-speaking guide. Please note however that this tour fills the time that the ship is docked in Manaus, it is therefore not possible to do any additional sightseeing of the city.

With several streams and over six miles of trails running through the area, the Ecopark Lodge is an ideal launching point for your rainforest exploration; admire the flora, gaze at the giant trees and spy the uncatalogued species of wildlife!

Upon arrival at the lodge, you will be invited to enjoy a welcome drink as you check in. You will be given a brief tour of the hotel and surrounding area and perhaps a little time to relax before you savour a buffet lunch.

Your first exciting jungle excursion is a visit to a native community – the Caboclos - along the riverside where you can witness local traditions and ways of life. Venture through igarapes (small creeks) in a motorized canoe and get a close up look at the magnificent jungle scenery. If river conditions permit, you may even fish for voracious piranhas!

Continue your adventure to Monkey Forest – a restricted area where you will be able to observe researchers working to rehabilitate monkeys that were once held captive. The spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, wooly monkeys and Capuchin monkeys – many of which are orphans – now roam free in this sanctuary.

Back at the lodge, enjoy an informal dinner before departing by motorised canoe (the main form of transportation in the rainforest) into the dense vegetation that has become flooded as the waters have risen. Once you are completely surrounded by the darkness of the rainforest, your native guide will begin flashing a strong light on the river’s surface until, with luck, it catches the shining eyes of a caiman. While the caiman remains hypnotised by the bright light, you slowly approach until your guide is able to catch it with his bare hands - a great opportunity to take a few photos before the caiman is released back into the water unharmed! Anacondas also call this area of the rainforest home, and you may be lucky enough to spy one or two prior to returning to the lodge for an overnight stay.

The next morning, following breakfast, meet your guide for an approximate one and a half hour nature walk of the jungle. Your guide will explain the complexities of the jungle eco-system, as well as pointing out a variety of medicinal plants. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for some of the indigenous animals and birds that inhabit the area!

Back at the lodge, lunch awaits before you bid farewell to the Ecopark Jungle Lodge. Your return transfer to Manaus will be via riverboat – in some instances it may be necessary to use a minibus for part of the journey.

Cruise up the Rio Negro and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience!

Departing Manaus in a local speedboat, you can enjoy an approximate one hour scenic trip along the Rio Negro, before you arrive at the floating dolphin platform where an unforgettable encounter awaits you!

Several years ago, two young boys began feeding the wild Amazon River (or pink) dolphins from the floating platform that adjoins their family home. Gradually, the dolphins – pink because of the number of blood vessels running beneath the surface of their skin – became more accustomed to human interaction and today visitors are able to stand on the platform to see, touch, and feed the dolphins if they wish.

Following this incredible experience, you will have time at leisure to explore a local village and gain an insight into the daily life of the indigenous tribes that live along the shores of the river. Enjoy a presentation of some of the ritual dances that are typical to the area, before re-boarding your vessel and navigating back down the Rio Negro to your awaiting ship.
