For more than 500 years of history, this tradition has been present in the religious and popular festivities. Every year, during the Passion Week, the towns and villages across the region celebrate this event. Processions can be seen with decorated floats carrying Jesus and Mary statues accompanied by nazarenos (penitents) who wear the typical habit with the distinctive pointed hood (capirote), holding long wax candles and marching in silence. Colours and forms of the habit are distinctive for each cofradia or confraternity. Sometimes even cappella choirs or drums follow the processions. The aroma of burning candles, the mournful trumpets that accompany the images of Christ and the Virgin Mary create an atmosphere that can transport even the most casual observer to another time and place.

Leaving the quayside and starting with a panoramic drive of the city, you will pass by many of Malaga’s important buildings, from the Bank of Spain and City Council, to General Torrijos Square, the Noble Hospital and the Tres Gracias (Three Graces) Fountain. Your first destination is the spectacular Castillo de Gibralfaro, the 14th century castle that stands proud above the city. Enjoy a short photo-stop and continue by bus back into central Malaga and begin your walking tour of the heart of the city at Merced Square, where Picasso lived as a child, and at the nearby Santiago church, Malaga Cathedral, the ancient Arab fortress. Enjoy free time at Larios Street before you leave central Malaga behind, to return to the ship.
