Introduction to Mahon

The narrow streets of Mahon have a charming mixture of chic shops, restaurants and bars to be discovered.  From here you can discover the beauty of Menorca: the sleepy fishing villages, stunning beaches and Monte Toro, the island’s highest peak.

The British moved the capital of Menorca to Mahon in 1721 because of its large natural harbour and the port area remains a focal point of the town.

The oldest structure is the San Roque archway, which is all that remains of the walls that once surrounded the town. Just down the road from here is the Town Hall, built in 1631 and with a fine clock presented by the British Governor, Richard Kane. Adjacent to the Town Hall is the Esglesia de Santa María la Major, founded in 1287: it has a magnificent four-keyboard organ, with over 3,000 pipes.

The narrow, mostly pedestrianised streets have a charming mixture of family-owned shops, cafés, and bars. The Xoriguer Gin Distillery gives the chance to see the famous Menorcan gin being made: there’s a shop where over a dozen different products are sold.

  •  Discover the history behind the invasion from Pirates in Mahon
  •  Learn how Menorca tried to defend itself from the enemies of the sea

Departing Mahón on the eastern side of the island, you will drive to the picturesque port of Addaia (outside visit), a favourite invasion spot for the pirates; therefore, the British Governor ordered the building to be named the spectacular Defence Tower which dates back to the 18th century.

Continuing on your journey along the north coast we will visit Fornells. The founding of the village of Fornells was closely linked to the need to fortify and defend its bay which was constantly attacked by pirate ships. In the 16th century, there existed only one 'atalaya' (watchtower) from which it was possible to observe the numerous shipwrecks such as that of the Aragonese ship Santisima Trinidad in 1590.  Gradually, due to demand fishermen came to the town to supply the castle. Here you will be given some free time to explore after a guided tour of the village.

Following this you will visit the Fortress of Isabel II, La Mola, (inside visit). The fortress standing on La Mola today is a Spanish masterpiece. This building was initiated after the demolition of Saint Philips Castle (San Felipe), due to reactivation of international tension in the Western Mediterranean, when France occupied Algeria. Minorca was left almost defenseless against the pirates. The military importance of Mahón harbour has been obvious for centuries, especially since the Sixteenth Century, in which political conditions converted the harbour into a port of call for the Spanish Crown’s connections with its Italian possessions.

Later, during the British dominion of Minorca, it became the English fleet’s Mediterranean support harbour, and lastly, in the Nineteenth Century, it was the crossroads of the English shipping route in the Mediterranean between Gibraltar and Malta. It was the English, in 1708, who initiated building on the northern shore, with Saint Anne’s fort (Santa Ana), consisting of a broken line, forming a Hornworks covered by a ravelin, closing the way to La Mola from the isthmus of Los Freus.

In 1722, under leadership of Governor Richard Kane, Mahon was proclaimed the island´s capital. The English were never to finish Saint Anne’s fort on La Mola, according to the plans drawn up by engineer Durand; however, for years there was a series of officers destined there waiting to see the fortification finished. Years later, in 1799, the English built two defense towers on La Mola: Saint Clair (Cala Taulera) and Erskine (Princesa).
