Fado is the memorable music that drifts out from the small bars of the Bairro Alto and Alfama districts of Lisbon. Fado consist of a mournful sounding solo singer complemented by a classical Portuguese guitar. No visit to Lisbon is complete without experiencing this traditional and expressive style of music.

The wives and families of the sailors absent on voyages of discovery first sang the sentimental songs.  The Fado originated as a song of considerable sadness sung by the poorer classes, expressing tales of unreciprocated passion, tragedy and jealousy.  As families that are more affluent took interest in Fado in the 18th century, it became lighter hearted and surrounded topical events of the day.

Departing from the quayside, enjoy a short sightseeing tour of Lisbon. Arrive at the typical restaurant of Timpanas, where Fado is performed.  In keeping with the spirit of the songs, the restaurant flourishes in the 15th and 18th century décor and furnishings.

Indulge in a typical dinner as Fado singers and folklore dancers perform for your entertainment.  Afterwards, return to the ship having savoured one of Lisbon's most distinctive flavours.

Discover Lisbon from two different perspectives as you enjoy a panoramic sightseeing tour of the city, before embarking on a leisurely cruise along the river.

Begin your tour with a panoramic drive of the centre of Lisbon, making a brief stop at the top of King Edward VII Park, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city and harbour. Pass by Pombal Square, the Avenida da Liberdade (Avenue of Liberty) and Rossio – the meeting point and very heart of Lisbon. You will also see the district of Baixa, an area entirely rebuilt following the disastrous earthquake of 1755, and Comércio Square, located along the waterfront.

The second – and most exciting – part of your tour will be an approximate one-and-a-half-hour trip along the estuary of the River Tagus. Sailing past the medieval part of the city, you can admire the castle that stands at the top of the hill, and the 12th century cathedral in the centre of the Moorish district of Alfama. Continuing along the river, you will pass under the spectacular suspension bridge which reminds many of the Golden Gate in San Francisco. In the distance stands the monumental statue of Christ the King, built as a thanksgiving for Portugal’s neutrality during World War II.

Sailing along the banks of the Belém area, you will see where the Caravels set sail for their great voyages of discovery. Perhaps one of the most surprising monuments, and particularly beautiful when seen from the river, is the memorial to Prince Henry – the mastermind navigator behind Portugal’s voyages of exploration and subsequent wealth. Discover the only two great buildings dating from the period of the discoveries and the rich reign of King Manuell, that survived the earthquake – the Royal Monastery of St Jerónimos, a masterpiece of ornate gothic style, and the Belém Tower, built as a fortress to defend the harbour of the rich 15th and 16th century capital of Portugal.

The origins of the quaint little town of Obidos, rising majestically above the lovely Gaeiras vineyards, are obscured in history, but may date as far back as 308 BC. The town was conquered by the Portuguese in 1148. A century and a half later, King Diniz, passing through with his young bride, gave her the town as a present, because she had admired the ramparts twinkling like a ribbon around a bouquet of shining white houses. From then on, Obidos was given as a wedding gift to all of Portugal’s queens.
