Introduction to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Benefitting from Gran Canaria's gorgeous climate and year-round warmth, Las Palmas is one of the Canary Island's most popular destinations, attracting thousands of sun-seekers every year who visit the island to relax on the abundance of golden-sand beaches and immerse themselves in the diverse range of cultures.

Las Palmas is the largest city in the Canary Islands and the capital of stunning Gran Canaria. A beautiful, interesting and charming city, it is said to have the world’s best climate and is bathed in warming sunshine nearly all-year round. Founded over 500 years ago, the city has an extensive heritage and an abundance of historic buildings and monuments to admire, as well as three gorgeous beaches including Playa de Las Canteras - regarded as one of the world's best beaches - to relax on.

Vegueta is the oldest part of the city and is where the finest examples of the Las Palmas’s extensive historic architecture and many charming bars and restaurants are found. At its centre you’ll find the twin towers of Santa Ana Cathedral. Started in 1500 but not finished for almost four centuries, the cathedral has a unique mix of Renaissance, Gothic and Neoclassical styles in its construction. In Plaza Santa Ana, there are bronze statues of dogs – the Romans named the islands after legendary canines – as well as many original buildings. These include the 17th-century Palacio Regental, the Town Hall and the Bishop's Palace.

Feel like a scientist as you are taken off the beaten track on this beautiful island.

After a drive along the east coast of the island you head up into the mountains until you reach the town of  Santa Lucia.  Here you will make a stop at the stunning Fortress of Ansite, a big rock formation of caves that the where used by the aboriginals as homes, tombs and for their place of defence. In the spring of 1483 this was also the place of the last battle between the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Vera and the ancient inhabitants, the “Guanches”. You will also get to view some archaeological excavations and be ready for a few surprises!!

In the nearby archaeological museum you get an idea of how life was in historical times. See the artefacts found in this area and view exhibitions of artefacts from other archaeological sites on the Island.

After a short drive you will be taken to a local Restaurant where over-looking some impressive views of the Valley of Tirajana you can relax and enjoy some fantastic Canary specialities.

You can be sure that your mind will be filled with unforgettable images and first-hand information that even most of the inhabitants of Gran Canaria are not aware of as you drive back to your awaiting ship.

Is this tour right for you?

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU? Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along a jacket. Guests with walking difficulties will have problems at the Fortress due to the uneven, unpaved underground and have to be aware that they cannot access to the inside of the cave. There is some moderate walking over unpaved and stony ground involved. The drive to Santa Lucia involves winding roads.
