La Coruna, Spain

Introduction to La Coruna, Spain

La Coruna is the capital of the province and a busy seaport situated in the Bay of Coruna.

The diverse architectural styles of La Coruna make this city an absolute delight for sightseeing. From the incredible medieval buildings and monuments to the stylish modernist houses that line the waterfront, La Coruna has something for everyone. The city also boasts an impressive seafront promenade, beautiful beaches and a host of attractions such as the Domus museum, the Casa del Hombre and Torre De Hercules - said to be the only Roman lighthouse in existence - which offers stunning views from the top of its 60 metre high tower.

The compact Ciudad Vieja – La Coruna’s old quarter – is one of the city’s must-visit areas. Often referred to as “the city” by the locals, the Ciudad Vieja features remains of the centuries-old Roman wall that once protected it. Here there are several ancient buildings and monuments to discover, such as the medieval Church of Santiago and an impressive collection of galleries and museums to explore, including the Museum of Sacred Art and the Military Museum.

Maria Pita Square in the centre of the city is home to a number of bars and restaurants and is where the city’s most impressive buildings and monuments are found, including the grand Palacio Municipal. The square - named after Maria Pita, La Coruna’s heroine - is also a cultural hub and is often used as a venue for festivals and events.

The Cathedral has a capacity of 1,000 people - in case this maximum is reached, doors will be closed thus access to the interior  is not guaranteed. For reference, the drive from the quayside to Santiago de Compostela takes approximately one hour each way. Toilet facilities are available at the lunch venue. Roof visit depends on weather conditions. For security reasons, in case of rain, it won’t be possible to visit the roof of the Cathedral.
