Horta Cruises
Horta, on the island of Faial, was discovered in the 19th century by Portuguese explorers, and has a vast maritime heritage. It is regarded as one of the most colourful marinas in the world, due to the thousands of paintings that adorn the marina walls, each marking the safe passage of a boat, and for calm seas as they continued their journey. The seas surrounding the island of Faial are considered to be one of the best places in Europe for whale and dolphin watching.
Top Experiences
Capelinhos Volcano
Capelinhos is Faial’s most famous landmark, situated on the western side of the island. The volcano transformed the island between the years of 1957 and 1958 when it erupted with devastating consequences, burying the landscape. The Interpretive Centre at the site depicts the story of the volcanic eruption, and features information on the geological history of the Azores.
Whale Watching
One of the most gratifying and exhilarating experiences you can ever have in the Azores is to go out whale spotting in the summer months when islands like Faial and Pico attract an abundance of these large marine mammals including huge cachalots, pilot whales, numerous species of dolphin and giant marine turtles.
