Introduction to Horta, Azores

The tranquil little port of Horta has long played host to transatlantic yachtsmen.

It stands on pretty Faial island, one of the nine emerald-green Azores - discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century. The islands volcanic origins have created a beautiful and unspoilt environment of craters, lakes, sheer cliffs and lush valleys, to which man has seemingly added only picturesque whitewashed houses and stately little baroque churches!

Other species which may be resident and waiting to be spotted are the Azorean Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs moreletti), the Eurasian Blackcap (Sylvia atricapila gularis), and the Azorean Golderest (Regulus regulus azoricus).

Throughout your tour, your guide will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, whilst pointing out the best places to spot the various species of birds.

Despite the Azore’s loneliness, the islands have an incredibly evergreen landscape, which is just waiting to be explored! Green meadows under blue skies and with the shimmering Atlantic Ocean as a background, makes this a sun-splashed environment ideal for exploring on horseback!

Your tour will begin with an approximate 30 minute journey to the village of Cedros. Upon arrival you will be greeted by your guide, given safety instructions and introduced to your horse.

All saddled up your adventure will begin on the local trail route, which will see you ambling along old village roads and into the laurel forest. After passing through an almost fairy-tale-like canyon, you cross a small river to reach terraced green meadows with beautiful views over the Atlantic Ocean. The trail will take you through the yam fields of Cedros, an excellent opportunity to trot through this eloquent landscape.

You will then reach Faial’s highest village – Ribeira Funda – home to old farm houses and superb views into the Ribeira Funda gorge. Keep your eyes peeled, as Buzzards often use the thermal lift offered by the gorge to hunt for prey!

Heading back to the Atlantic coastline, you will pass by the old whale-watching station – located on Caldeira, the station offers a 200-degree view over the ocean. Back in the village of Cedros, the trail will take you past centuries-old farm houses before arriving back to the lodge.
