Honningsvag (North Cape), Norway

Introduction to Honningsvag (North Cape), Norway

Honningsvag was completely destroyed during the Second World War, but rapidly rebuilt. Now this beautiful little fishing port, with distinctive pastel-shaded buildings, attracts tourists from all over the world. The gateway to the North Cape - often referred to as the “top of Europe”- Honningsvag is framed by rugged mountains and the grey Arctic Ocean.

On the North Cape, the North Cape Hall is a visitor centre offering wide-screen film presentations about the four seasons at the Cape, along with exhibitions, a panoramic window on to the Arctic Ocean. In the Kompasset restaurant, good food can be savoured while enjoying fabulous sea views while the Grotten Bar - a huge cave cut into the face of the Cape cliff - is a truly unique place to enjoy a coffee and freshly baked waffles.

Be sure to explore Nordkapp (North Cape) – Europe’s most northernmost point. Here you will find rocky coastlines, picturesque villages, seemingly endless cliff faces and vast snow-capped mountains. For two months during the summer, the sun is visible 24 hours a day at Nordkapp, so you can explore anytime, day or night. At other times of the year - when the sun does set - the Northern Lights can be seen from Nordkapp, so there is always a special experience to be had.

For a unique experience, don't miss the Artico Ice Bar in the centre of Honnigsvag. The bar is made entirely of ice sourced from the natural lakes of Norwegian Lapland. Here you can enjoy a drink at the bar, take a look around the full size igloo or visit the shop and purchase a memento of your trip to the world’s northernmost Ice Bar.

The puffins, easily recognisable by their colourful bills, nest in holes in the grassy hills. During the nesting period, from the beginning of April to mid-August, the whole area teems with life, in the air and on land. If you are lucky you will glimpse sea eagles and golden eagles overhead, hunting for prey. Common guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skuas, and gannets are also part of the flourishing birdlife at Gjesværstappan. Back in Gjesvær, after approximately one and a half hours at sea, you will make the return drive to Honningsvåg.
