Introduction to Helsinki, Finland

Finland's capital since 1812, built on a peninsula amid a cluster of islands, stately Helsinki is 'the Daughter of the Baltic'.

Helsinki – Finland’s capital – is a beautiful seaside city spread out over a large network of pretty islands. The city is compact and easy to navigate on foot and those who take the time to explore the city are rewarded with some stunning views and a host of interesting attractions and places of interest to visit.

The city has a vibrant yet laid back atmosphere and a stroll through the city is an exciting experience. There are large park areas, forests, beautiful lakes and over 100 kilometres of coastline to explore, so there are plenty of places to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of this stunning part of the world. There's even an UNESCO-listed sea fortress to explore just a short distance from the shore, which is well worth a visit via a short ferry journey to see the historic walls and gates and wander through the pretty parks.

Helsinki is also home to some fine architecture, galleries & museums, a large number of shops, bars and restaurants and even a unique ‘chapel of silence’, where people can have a moment of silence away from the hustle and bustle of Narinkkatori Square – the city’s busiest district.

Senate Square - located in the heart of the city - is one of Helsinki's most historic and interesting areas. Home to fine examples of neoclassical architecture - including unique designs from renowned architect Carl Ludvig Engel - the square is one of Finland's most photographed areas.
