Hell-Ville (Andoany), Nosy Be, Madagascar

Colonial ruin in Hell Ville, Nosy Be island, northern of Madagascar

Introduction to Hell-Ville (Andoany), Nosy Be, Madagascar

Although commonly known as Hell-Ville, Andoany – the capital of the beautiful Madagascan island of Nosy Be – is anything but ‘hellish’. Warm and welcoming, the city boasts fine colonial architecture, busy markets and a pretty harbour. It’s also a gateway to the island’s stunning rainforests, fascinating wildlife and sun-kissed beaches.

Bordered by mile-upon-mile of glorious golden sands and bathed in sunshine year-round, the breathtaking Madagascan island of Nosy Be is one of the most popular beach resorts in the Indian Ocean. However, there’s much more to this patch of paradise than just relaxing and topping-up your tan; there are incredible areas of unspoilt natural beauty to explore too, both ashore and in the warm, crystal clear waters surrounding the island.

Smothered with dense tropical rainforests, Nosy Be is incredible for watching wonderfully diverse wildlife in their natural environment. Spread over 740 hectares, Lokobe National Park is one of the island’s many unmissable natural gems and is home to an abundance of endemic fauna and flora. Exploring the park is a typically Madagascan experience, with the unmistakable call of Black, Grey-backed and Mouse Lemurs echoing through the tree canopies, fascinating chameleons  camouflaging seamlessly into the unspoilt environment, boa constrictors snaking along the leafy forest floor and much more.

For a taste of the island’s culture, you may wish to while away a few hours in the capital, Andoany. Nicknamed Hell-Ville after Queen Tsiomeko signed a treaty with Admiral de Hell of France in 1841; this city is in fact anything but ‘hellish’. Boasting fine examples of colonial architecture, bustling markets, charming coffee houses and a pretty harbour, Andoany is a delight to explore. Highlights to discover on a relaxing amble around the historic city include the Russian Monument, which was erected in the memory of Russian soldiers that drowned off the coast of Nosy Be in 1904; and the Oceanographic Museum, where you can admire a selection of the island’s native sea creatures up close.
