Introduction to Gustavia, St Barthelemy

French chic, brightly painted houses and the glittering yacht harbour of charming Gustavia reveal the style and sophistication of tiny St. Barthelemy, a miniature Caribbean Côte d’Azur, just eight miles square. This stunning volcanic island is home to craggy cliffs, iguanas and turtles, designer boutiques, salt flats and dazzling white-sand beaches.

With brightly coloured houses, a glittering yacht filled harbour and touch of French chic, Gustavia is an exhibition of St Barthelemy’s class, style and glamorous culture. Often referred to as the Caribbean’s miniature Côte d'Azur, the whole island is only 8 miles square and takes just 1.5 hours to circumnavigate by boat.

As the island’s capital, Gustavia is St Barthelemy’s greatest and most important attraction. The quiet beaches and constant warm climate make it a haven for tourists, a wonderful tropical getaway from the stress of modern living. The town centre has many high-end boutiques, perfect for a little retail therapy and restaurants serving a range of fine cuisines.

Is this tour right for you?

As with all creatures in their natural environment, the presence of marine life cannot be guaranteed, and tickets are non-refundable should a sighting not occur. The clarity of the water at the time of your visit cannot be guaranteed. Depending upon weather conditions, an alternative snorkelling site may be visited. Guests must exercise caution when boarding the catamaran, as swells may be possible. Homemade rum punch and snacks will be served on your return journey. We recommend that you come already wearing your swimwear under your clothes. Do not forget to bring your sun protection and a towel – an underwater camera is highly recommended! Guests must remove their shoes before boarding the catamaran. The catamaran will have a shaded seating area as well as a netted (trampoline) seating area at the front. Panoramic Coach Tour

Explore the highlights of the island of St Barthelemy from the comfort of your minivan.

Leaving the pier, you will travel past the city of Gustavia and up to the lighthouse. Here you will be able to admire impressive views of your ship at anchor, the town and the charming harbour.

Continue to La Tourmente, the renowned crossroads of St Barth’s where you may be surprised by aircraft almost skimming the road as they come in to land – it’s no wonder that pilots need a special licence to land!

Next, pass St Jean Beach, one of the most popular beaches on the island, before taking the road to the salines (salt ponds). St Barth’s used to export its salt to other islands in the Caribbean.

From Grand Fond you can marvel at breathtaking views over the green valley and the raging ocean breaking on the shoreline. It is often very windy here and the landscape is reminiscent of Brittany. Only a few years ago, Grand Fond was the cattle centre for St Barth’s, with many cows and goats imported here from Central America before they were re-exported to the likes of Guadeloupe.

Follow the road towards Toiny in the north east, passing by the house of the former ballet dancer Noureiev. Continue through Petit Cul de Sac and Grand Cul de Sac with its large lagoon and upscale hotels, including Guanahani and Lei Sereno.

Next, admire the sight of Marigot at the entrance of Pointe Milou, a rocky point with many villas perched atop a high cliff. Pass through Lorient with its cemeteries strewn with beautiful flowers, and La Vigie and Coupe-Gorge, where pirates are said to have cut throats. Today the area boasts magnificent views over the sea.

Your tour continues as you pass Colombier and Corossol, a charming fishing village known for its traditional bonnets and straw baskets.

Finally, after climbing the hill and passing the commercial dock, water and electricity plants, you arrive back to the pier and your awaiting ship.

YELLOW SEMI-SUBMARINE CRUISE (TOUR C)

  • Enjoy a relaxing cruise in a semi-submarine
  • Discover the underwater world of St Barth’s
  • Get up close to colourful marine life

Price£30.00 - £40.00
DurationApprox. 1 hour
LimitationVery limited capacity
Walking level 1 - minimal or no walkingMinimal or no walking

Experience a unique view of life below the water’s surface as you explore by semi-submarine.

Step aboard the Yellow Semi-Submarine and enjoy an approximate one hour cruise along the south-east coast of the Marine Park.

Following a safety briefing, you will descend into the hull of this cruising underwater observatory, where you can marvel at marine life through the large, clear-glass windows. Departing from the harbour, you will firstly pass over the wreck of the 50-foot Island Freighter Marignan, which sank during the famous Hurricane Luis in 1995. The wreck is now home to many species of marine life - if you are lucky you may even catch a glimpse of some turtles.

Next, your vessel will cross the south-east edge of the St Barth Marine Park. Here you can admire the sea life that parades right in front of your eyes. The sea floor is full of colourful coral reefs which are often frequented by troops of Sargent Major fishes.

Journey to a group of three tiny rock islands called The Saints. Here the crew onboard will feed the surrounding fish, so don’t be surprised if a number of fish suddenly appear – you may even have the rare opportunity of spotting a shark or two! You will stop here for approximately ten minutes before returning to the harbour via the same route.

On the return journey, you can savour the opportunity to sit and relax on the outside upper deck, from where you can take in sights of beautiful yachts and the breathtaking shores of St Barth’s.
