Getxo (for Bilbao), Spain

Introduction to Getxo (for Bilbao), Spain

Getxo is a welcoming and attractive seaside location, and is the port for Bilbao.

The town of Getxo in Northern Spain is one of the country’s most under-rated destinations. A pretty, welcoming town, Getxo is home to some wonderful beaches, beautiful architecture and truly impressive monuments including the UNESCO listed Vizcaya Bridge – the world’s oldest transport bridge.

The town’s Old Port area – Algorta – is situated at the end of the Ereaga beach and is popular with both locals and visitors who come to soak up the sunshine, enjoy the vibrant nightlife and try their hand at some exciting water sports. At the opposite end of Ereaga you will discover pretty palaces and buildings from the early 20th century and beautiful gardens to explore.

Getxo is also perfectly placed for tours to nearby Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque country. Home to the world famous Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Fine Art and stunning architecture including the 14th century Gothic-Style cathedral, Bilbao is packed with things to see and do.

Continuing, you then arrive at the old quarter, also known as the ‘Seven Streets’. This area used to be the walled part of the town until the end of the 19th century and included exactly seven streets, with narrow alleys connecting them, known as cantons. The old quarter is probably the most colourful part of Bilbao, and features shops, taverns and several historical churches (San Antón, Santos Juanes, the Cathedral and San Nicolás).

During your visit, you can enjoy some typical pintxos - a tantalising array of miniature tapas - in a local bar as your guide educates you on these culinary treats. Feeling refreshed, you will then embark on a brief walking tour through this quarter of the city in order to admire the highlights.
