Travelling west, you will pass through Ribiera Brava before reaching the plateau of Paul da Serra. Here you will discover the valley of Rabaçal, one of nature’s greatest exultations. A walk to the Risco Waterfall will lead you to the Levada of 25 Fontes.

The forest surrounding the Levada dates back to the Tertiary age and has survived the last glaciations; it is now the natural habitat for several species of birds including the Columba Trocaz, Fringille and Pipit Berthelot amongst others. Be sure to have your cameras ready as your guide leads you through this interesting area.

Encounter the southeast of Madeira where numerous  endemic bird species and Macaronesia subspecies reside.

 

Your tour begins with an approximate 45 minute drive from the harbour to Caniçal. From sea level to up to 120 meters of altitude you will have the chance to observe some migratory birds like egrets, waders and waterfowl, the funny Berthelot's pipit, the shy rock sparrow and the Atlantic canary and goldfinches all singing together to celebrate the spectacular sightseeing of the eastern tip of Madeira island - Caniçal. Your expert guide will point out and call the local birds.

Going up to a cooler spot, the buzzards, kestrels, plain and pallid swifts will watch you from the blue sky. Reaching the 800 meters of altitude, the bluish Madeira chaffinch will brighten up the sky with the curious robins and the hidden Greenfinches at the top of the canopy controlling our moves.

Be sure to take your camera to capture some incredible photographs before heading back to the ship.

Discover the city  in a fun, innovative and independent way, by City Bubble, electric car.

Enjoy a self-drive guided tour in a City Bubble, electric vehicle, through the old and narrow streets of Funchal city and surrounding breathtaking views, with the Deserted Islands and the ocean as a backdrop.

You will be accompanied by two City Bubble guides. One travels in the front vehicle and the other behind the group. They will provide you with interesting information over the PA system in each vehicle.

Meet your guide, and settle into your Bubble Car, with room for just two. Begin your tour by driving along Funchal’s sea front, continuing your journey through the remarkable narrow streets of the old town. Be astounded as you reach Neves Viewpoint, located approximately 283 metres above sea level, this belvedere provides one of the most beautiful views over Funchal’s city bay.

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU? This tour involves minimal walking, the Bubble Car itself is situated low down, therefore could be challenging for guests with back or knee injuries. Guests wishing to drive must hold a valid driving licence. Please note that the passenger will sit behind the driver. Single guests may share a vehicle, in which case the driving can be shared. Adults wishing to book as passengers must book with a driver - there are no drivers available for guests not wanting to drive themselves. The minimum age for passengers is 18 years old and they must have a valid driving licence. The total combined weight of guests in each vehicle must be no more than 200kg per bubble car. Participating in this activity, entails the full compliance of the instructions given by the guide as well as the correct use of the individual bubble cars. Around every curve there is something new to be discovered!

Your walk will begin from Vale Paraiso, where you set off along the levada – a traditional manmade irrigation system ideal for walkers. Discover many breathtaking Madeira sceneries, whilst walking through the island's ancient watercourses. The first levadas date back to the 15th century, and were constructed by workers who were often suspended from baskets, carving through sheer cliff faces. The whole network is approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) long.

Whilst you walk you get the chance to enjoy some magnificent scenery and the tranquillity - a heaven for levada walking and nature lovers. It’s a green subtropical paradise of volcanic origin. Few walking destinations offer such variety with picturesque villages, rugged peaks, alpine plateaus, verdant valleys, orchards full of fruit, wild flowers in abundance and an unspoilt coastline with towering sea cliffs.

Following your guided walk, you will drive to Camacha, a village famous for being the wickerwork centre of Madeira. Here craftsmen create more than 800 different kinds of baskets; they also make furniture and simple tools. You can enjoy some free time to admire the handmade willow crafts, before the journey back to your ship.

On Sunday afternoon, the streets of Funchal city centre are once again filled with music, colour and soft aromas, with the sumptuous float parade, which harmoniously combines numerous floral species with blooming decorations full of creativity. The Flower Festival Float Parade, held since 1979, is one of the most striking and eagerly anticipated events of the entire festival, for tourists and residents alike. It takes place at the seafront avenue. This event is known for the magnificence and splendour of the floats and costumes of the hundreds of participants, mostly children, richly adorned with numerous, varied and magnificent floral species, parading along a planned route to the sound of festive musical themes and performing both simple and elaborate choreographies.

The Flower Festival is also a cultural event.Tradition is particularly associated with the event, whether through the performances of folk groups, or through the construction of the beautiful floral carpets. At the same time, homage is paid to flowers at the magnificent Flower Exhibition and the city is animated with music concerts and variety shows.’

Although Madeira is a small Island, it is rich in majestic scenery and rare beauty; enjoy the opportunity to explore the charms and delights of this floating garden.

One of the main places to visit on Madeira is Funchal, the capital of the archipelago and Caniço, situated on the east coast of the island. The capital of the archipelago is on the south coast of Madeira, in a beautiful bay washed by the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by green mountains and deep valleys.

Your first stop is at Pináculo Belvedere, 283 metres above sea level, where you have one of the most beautiful views of the bay of Funchal. Continue towards Caniço, more precisely Ponta do Garajau, where the Christ King statue is placed. The statue is similar to the one built in Rio de Janeiro, on Mount Corcovado, but on a much smaller scale and identical to the statue built in Almada, opposite the city of Lisbon. The Rio statue was recently elected one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”. From here you can look out at the Desertas Islands, a Nature Reserve that is also a refuge for the monk seal since 1990. Ponta do Garajau is also a partial Nature Reserve, and is the country’s only exclusive marine reserve. Among the fauna in the park are large fish such as the dusky grouper and a wide variety of other coastal species.

En route back to Funchal, you stop at the Pico Dos Barcelos, from where you can admire the wonderful view of the Atlantic Ocean and Funchal Bay.

Embark on a scenic drive to Ribeiro Frio which is set in the Laurissilva Forest (a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site). Ribeiro Frio is known for its sublime landscape and beautiful gardens. Although it is a small Island, Madeira is rich in majestic scenery and rare beauty. We invite you to explore the charms and delights of this floating garden.

Travel though the capital of the archipelago on the south coast of Madeira, in a beautiful bay washed by the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by mountains and deep valleys. Travelling to the east on the old road, your first stop is at the Pináculo Belvedere, approximately 283 meters above sea level; you have one of the most beautiful views of the bay and harbour of Funchal.

Next, travel towards Caniço, more precisely to Ponta do Garajau, where the Christ King statue is located since 1927, a promise by Council member Aires de Ornelas. This statue is similar to the one built in Rio de Janeiro, on the Corcovado mountain, recently elected one of the New seven wonders of the world and identical to the statue built in Lisbon.

We will then proceed to Pico dos Barcelos, a viewpoint from where you can see distant Funchal and the surrounding villages scattered over the green slopes.

Finally, enjoy a stop in the centre of Funchal before returning to the ship.

All guests must be able to get on and off the coach unaided. To get the most out of the tour, it is recommended that guests depart the tour coach at each viewpoint to appreciate the best views, there will be a few steps to negotiate at each stop. However participants can stay on the coach if they wish. Please not there will be toilet facilities at the various stops.
