Introduction to Fredrikstad, Norway
Home to the best preserved fortress town in all of Scandinavia, Fredrikstad is a proud, pretty city with lots to explore and plenty to enjoy. The city straddles the River Glomma and is divided into two contrasting sections. On one side of the water you will find the modern city centre, on the other side you will discover the famous Old Town.
When you explore Fredrikstad’s Old Town you begin to understand why the locals are so proud of this historic site. The town was founded in 1567 and has been so painstakingly well preserved that a visit here is like a step back in time. Be sure to visit the Fredrikstad Fortress with its wide moats and high earth ramparts. There’s also a huge stone wall and a traditional drawbridge to visit and original buildings that now serve as characterful cafes and restaurants.
