Floro, Norway

Introduction to Floro, Norway

Florø - Norway's westernmost city - was pnce of the country's busiest herring fisheries and you can still feel the importance fishing has on this city.

Located near the Sognefjord – the largest fjord in Norway – pretty Floro is Norway’s westernmost town. With a strong heritage as a fishing and shipbuilding town, Floro is an important part of Norway’s economy. The town has also been used as a supply base for the petroleum industry since the discovery of petroleum in the North Sea during the 60’s.

Though Floro is relatively small, there are still a few attractions to discover and enjoy, such as the Sogn og Fjordane Kystmuseet (Coastal Museum) that is full of exhibits that showcase the important of Floro as a maritime town. It is also well worth taking a trip to the Storeasen Viewpoint from where the best views of Floro and the surrounding fjords are had. There are benches and tables, so you can sit down, relax and enjoy the view, plus several German tunnels and bunkers from World War Two dotted around the site.

Floro’s Old Quarter - found at Strandgata, the town’s main street - is where the most significant 19th century timber houses and other characterful buildings are found. At Strandgata, you will also find small shops, restaurants and cosy coffee houses.

You will travel through the charming town of Florø and learn how it became an important port along the western coast of Norway, being a main stop in journeys along the rugged coast to and from Bergen.

Your first stop will be at the Coastal Museum. This museum was established in 1980 and is constantly expanding its collection, safeguarding the history and heritage of the coastal villages. The exhibit includes cultural and historical collections, displaying everything from kitchen utensils and furniture to boats and fishing and hunting equipment. A separate exhibit demonstrates oil extraction and processing in the North Sea. For this exhibit the room itself is unique - having been designed in a converted pillar of an actual oil rig.

On the return to Florø you visit Fjord Base. Set beside the sea at the foot of Brandsøyåsen, this is the region’s largest supply base for oilrigs and one of the principal industries of Florø. Your tour finishes with a drive through the historic town centre to the pier. Florø is a modern town in many ways, yet it is the oldest one in the county. Although Florø has gone through many changes, the original charm and small town feeling has remained.

Join this boat trip to the islands of Kinn and Svanøy and see how the inhabitants live and work on these remote idylls.

After approximately half an hour your boat will reach the green, grass covered island of Kinn and you will feel you are stepping back in time. A walk will take you to the legendary Kinn Church. Built in the Roman building style, it has been in use since the 12th century and it is believed that the church was built by Celts hiding from religious persecution. Nowadays the church is used only during the summer months. It is also a historical assembly site, especially during the annual chronicle play around mid summer. The open-air amphitheatre on the southern side of the church was built in 1985. One of the few inhabitants of the island will guide you through fascinating stories and myths connected to the church. She is also a musician and will play some music.

Continuing, you will travel to Svanøy - also known as ‘the jewel of Sunnfjord’ it is the most fertile island off Florø. The locals have protected their cultural and natural treasures and your visit will show you the best of both. On arrival you will walk to the Norwegian Deer Centre. After a lunch of local produce you will have time to look around. The Deer Centre is the national centre for spreading knowledge and developing competence in the association with wild deer and deer bred on farms. Make sure you have your camera to hand to get some photos of the deer.

After your fascinating visits it will be time to take the return boat journey back to the mainland.
