Flåm (Flam), Norway

Introduction to Flåm (Flam), Sognefjord

Flåm is a tiny village on the banks of the Aurlandsfjord, one of the branches of the beautiful Sognefjord – the longest and deepest fjord in Europe. The setting is utterly spectacular.

A stroll along the waterside, past orchards and hamlets, cottages and farmland, helps to explain why this area is so enduringly popular with visitors. Back in the village, the pretty church with its traditionally decorated walls, is one of the oldest in Norway.

In recent years the Flåm Railway has become a major attraction. Finished in 1944, it climbs over 20km and almost a thousand metres through magnificent scenery, in and out of mountains, past waterfalls and ravines, pausing at the beautiful Kjosfossen waterfall - where water crashes 225 metres down the side of the cliffs - for a photo opportunity. Down in the village, the Flåmsbana Museum tells the story of the railway’s design and construction.

Flåm is also perfectly placed if you wish to explore Naeroyfjord – An UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful fjords in the world. The fjord can be explored via boat trips and kayaking tours. The sights and sounds of the fjord are incredible and not to be missed.

If there is somewhere you have a burning desire to visit that is not to be found in this programme?

PriceFrom £395.00 Per
DurationApproximately 4 Hours
Walking level 1 - minimal or no walkingMinimal or no walking

If there is somewhere you have a burning desire to visit that is not to be found in this programme, why not book a private tour. Private tours also provide a more personal experience – with one-to-one service from an excellent, English Speaking driver – and may particularly appeal to passengers who find the pace of organised tours a little difficult to keep, or those who rely on a wheelchair. Unfortunately many venues do have lots of steps, and lifts are a rarity, however on a private tour our guides will do their best to tailor-make the itinerary, considering any difficulties. Unfortunately it is not possible to arrange private tours in all of the Norwegian ports – but we’ve listed below the ports that can accommodate.

2-4 passengers

(for a minimum of 4 hours), you can have your very own car, English speaking driver, to take you wherever you want to go – you decide. This price, per vehicle and will take you anywhere you would like to visit. If you use a wheelchair but are able to get in and out of a car, this option could be suitable for you (for those confined to a wheelchair, please see the next paragraph) - please advise at the time of booking as the price may differ.

5-8 passengers

(for a minimum of 4 hours), you can have your very own minivan and English speaking driver. You custoise the tour itinerary! If an adapted vehicle is required, in order to accommodate your wheelchair, please advise at the time of booking as the price may differ

Is this tour right for you?

PLEASE NOTE: Private tours should be booked in advance of your cruise, through the Shore Tours department at Head Office in Ipswich. E-mail requests can be sent to shore.tours@fredolsen.co.uk or please indicate on your booking form that a private tour is required and send separate details of what you would like to see and how long you would like the vehicle, although there is scope to change your plans on the day, after all, we realise that once you are in a fascinating city, it might be too difficult to decide! Road taxes and ferries are not included in the cost – these would need to be settled on the spot.

Aurland is a small yet thriving village, situated by the Aurlandsfjord; a branch of the lovely Sognefjord, and with a 13th century Gothic style stone church in the centre. You will reach Aurland after an approximate 15 minute drive from Flåm and journey inland along the salmon River Aurland, past Vassbygda Lake. At Vassbygda there is a hydroelectric plant, the generators of which are cleverly hidden inside the mountain, however you may be able to spot some of the many wires and electric towers.

Ascending the Låvisdal Valley via several bends, and partly through tunnels, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the villages of Vassbygda and Aurland. Continuing further upwards, you eventually arrive in the spectacular Aurland Valley, rich in flora and fauna. Travel as far as Østerbø where refreshments are served in the small mountain lodge - once a farm but uninhabited since the 1920’s. During winter, the farm was completely isolated and cut off from the rest of the world for many months.
