Dubrovnik, Croatia

Braemar in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Introduction to Dubrovnik

Perched between mountains and sea on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, Dubrovnik is the 'Jewel of the Adriatic'.

An UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic maritime city of Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s most popular and interesting tourist destinations. With several historic monuments and scarred streets that tell tales of wars and the nation’s battle for independence, Dubrovnik is an incredible city to just walk round and explore.

Many visitors start their Dubrovnik adventure with a walk around the Ramparts – the great walls of the Old Town that are almost 2km long and up to 25 metres high in places. From the walls, you can find wonderful views of the Adriatic’s blue waters and truly appreciate the surrounding Baroque buildings. Other points of interest include the Onofrio fountain at Pile Gate - built in 1438 for people coming into town to wash away any plague germs and Fort Lovrijenac, a fort built to protect the freedom of Dubrovnik from the Venetian invasion.

Walk down the Stradun and squares open out, many of them with open-air bars and cafés, while every corner seems to have sculptures or fountains, bell towers or gardens. At the far end of the Stradun is the magnificent cathedral: originally Byzantine, it was rebuilt as a Romanesque church in the Middle Ages and again in the baroque style following an earthquake in 1667.
