Introduction to Crossing the Tropic of Cancer
The Tropic of Cancer is also known as the Northern Tropic, is where the sun is directly overhead at noon-time, marking the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere. This and the Tropic of Capricorn were so named as the sun was in the constellation of Cancer and Capricron respectively, when they were named 2,000 years ago.
Located 23 degrees north of the equator, the Tropic of Cancer is the northernmost point on earth at which the sun appears directly overhead at noon. Cruising across this imaginary line offers guests more daylight hours, en route from the Caribbean towards the Azores. Now due to the precession of the equinoxes, the Sun is no longer in these constellations during these times, but the names still remain.
