Introduction to Costa Maya, Mexico
Fancy a Mexican adventure?
Costa Maya was badly damaged in a hurricane in 2007 and during the reconstruction a modern shopping mall was built, with lots of stores selling jewellery, leather goods and souvenirs. There’s also a central plaza with swimming pools and bars. A new beach promenade was built which stretches for over two kilometres and has open-air cafés and yet more shops. The region around the village has some important Mayan ruins, such as the ancient city of Chacchoben, built in the fourth century. Nearby, the former fishing village of Mahahual has soft white-sand beaches with grass-thatched open-air stalls selling freshly grilled fish and seafood.

On this cruise tour, we can explore two exciting sites that few can say they have visited; Dzibanche, with its pyramids and landscaped grounds; and the multileveled Mayan city of Kohunlich, surrounded by magnificent cahoon palms.
We will see first hand the ancient dwelling near the border of Belize, as our guide leads the way.
Dzibanche was once known for its beautiful pottery and splendid temples hidden within the jungle. Upon arrival we will have the opportunity to discover the tallest temple, right next to the Temple of the Owls and the Temple of the Captives.
After exploring this once ruling city, we head off to the famous Mayan site of Kohunlich. This recently excavated archaeological site is named after the giant cahoon palm trees that surround it. Here we will see the Temple of the Masks, with the unique sculpted masks running up the front stairway.
CRUISE TOUR NOTES: This cruise tour – which is unsuitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users – involves considerable walking over rough, uneven surfaces and several steps, so comfortable, enclosed walking shoes are essential; we will spend approximately one and a half hours at each site (subject to traffic conditions). Participants should be extra cautious not to slip or fall whilst visiting these ancient sites. It is not permitted to climb certain ruins due to their fragile state. We recommend you bring sun protection and insect repellent. There is a government tax of US $5-8 (correct at the time of printing) on the use of video cameras in each park. No tripods or professional cameras are allowed; flash photography is prohibited. Complimentary bottled water will be provided on the tour vehicle. This cruise tour includes a drive of nearly approximately two to two and a half hours in each direction; no comfort stops will be made. A packed lunch is included; this must be eaten on the coach, as no food is allowed at the sites. Please note this cruise tour may operate in reverse order.
