Introduction to Copenhagen

With its vibrant, friendly atmosphere, wonderful culture and beautiful architecture, Copenhagen is a Scandinavian tourist haven. The narrow, cosmopolitan streets are always busy with welcoming locals and are lined with colourful cafes, bars, shops and places to eat. Visiting Copenhagen is always an exciting, enjoyable experience.

Much of Copenhagen’s most interesting and most popular tourist destinations are either within the city centre or are a short walk away, so there is always something to see or experience. Must-visit attractions include the historic Christianborg and Amelienborg Palaces, The Little Mermaid sculpture at Langelinje Pier, Kronborg Castle and Rosenborg Castle.

Nyhavn - Copenhagen’s 17th century waterfront and canal - is where you will find many brightly coloured 17th and 18th century townhouses that have been converted into bars and restaurants and many wooden ships in the historic harbour. There are also several galleries, museums, a zoo and an aquarium for you to enjoy and explore. There is a never a dull day in the Danish capital.

At Gammel Strand – formerly the old Fish Market – leave your coach to board a canal boat. Copenhagen is surrounded by water and a network of bridges connects the two main islands of Sjælland and Amager, on which the city is built. Enjoy the view as you travel on the narrow canals – passing the Christiansborg Palace and Nyhavn canal area – and into the open harbour, where you will pass the Opera House and onwards to the Langelinie area where you may spot your own cruise ship! Cruise by (behind) the statue of The Little Mermaid.

Your leisurely cruise continues through the canals of Christianshavn – a very charming area with houseboats and very low bridges. Historic buildings are to be enjoyed side by side with the newer architecture. Back at Gammel Strand, opposite Christiansborg Palace, your coach awaits to take you on a mini sightseeing tour of the city. Pass most of the main places of interest and enjoy a short stop at Amalienborg Palace before returning to your ship.

Enjoy a culinary discovery of Copenhagen as you experience some of the specialties of Denmark on this tasty tour.

Located 15 minutes from the pier in the middle of the city you will arrive at Copenhagen Market Halls - Torvehallerne. The impressive new Market Halls are constructed of glass and steel and positioned amid the historic quarter of the city, creating a compelling contrast of old and new. The construction of the Market halls took inspiration from buildings in Sweden, Spain, Cuba, Italy and Morocco.

Torvehallerne’s story is as interesting as its design. Envisioned as early as 1997 to help revive what had become a forlorn square, the marketplace was beset by delays, both financial and bureaucratic. Finally, in September of 2011, the Market Halls opened to gourmands whose mouths were watering for an exciting city destination and true foodie experience.

Torvehallerne presents a place to meet, greet and eat with more than 60 vendors offering everything from sushi to cupcakes in the two streamlined and symmetrically positioned halls. The entire world is represented by the market’s delectable nibbles. Spanish tapas, French brie, Japanese tempura and, of course, Nordic fare, all are to be found here. No wonder the marketplace has such international flavor.

Meet your guide and enjoy a taste of Torvehallerne for yourself. You may sample fresh fruits and greens, spices, meats, sweets and coffee. Along the way, you will learn about the growing of food in the cold North and the history of Copenhagen, especially as it pertains to food. Your tastings will make up a light meal and create memories to savor.

After this tasty introduction to Danish specialties and the opportunity to discover the Market Hall yourself, you will return to your awaiting ship.
