For something a little bit different, why not enjoy a day out amongst the Roman Countryside of the Castelli Romani region, world-renowned for its wines.

Situated along the slopes of the Monte Tuscolo, Frascati is one of the most important towns within the Castelli Romani region. It is known as the Città del Vino or ‘City of Wine’ and is an ideal place to spend a relaxing day. At weekends, the streets are crowded with visitors from all over the world that come to enjoy the popular local wine and food in addition to the cheerful greetings of the local people. Frascati is also famous for its ‘Ville Tuscolane, a lavish aristocratic residence of late renaissance and baroque style which the noble Romans had built on the green fields of Colli Albani.

Your tour begins with an approximate two hour coach journey to Frascati, where upon arrival you will be greeted by your local guide and the owner of the winery.

A short guided walk of the old town will allow you to discover the centre of Frascati. Throughout, your guide will regale stories about the history of wine and you may even have an opportunity to meet with local artisans, before you travel to the Minardi family farmhouse for a tasting of some of the best wines in the region.

As soon as you arrive at the farmhouse, you will be greeted by the winemaker of the family, who will take you on a tour across the old vineyards and tell you about the old farming techniques which the family have been adopting for centuries. Travel into the past of winemaking, listening to the stories and experiences of this historic land.

Continuing, you visit the old wine cellar of the historic winery, where you will be introduced to the secrets of the historic wine-making processes of the famous Frascati wine.

Then it is time to taste the famous Frascati Wine.

Your guide, a certified wine taster of the family, will talk you through a generous tasting of the three wines from the family production, a wine cooperation of two families in the same valley: the famous Frascati Superiore DOCG white wine, the Vagnolo IGP red wine, as well as the Frascati DOC white wine. All of the wines will be paired with typical breads and pizzas, porchetta, an aged cheese with the families own wine jelly, and traditional wine cookies. You will also have an oil tasting of the Minardi Family’s own extra virgin olive oil.

At the end of the wine and olive oil tasting you will be taken to the family taverna in the centre of Frascati to enjoy a local lunch.

Refreshed, you join your coach for your return journey back to the quayside and your awaiting ship.

Situated alongside the Tiber River in Trastevere, Villa Farnesina is one of most extraordinary Renaissance buildings, and is not to be missed when visiting Rome.

The grandeur of Villa Farnesina is easily distinguishable from the charming, deliberately narrow cobblestoned streets of neighbouring Trastevere. Designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi during the height of the Italian Renaissance, the original owner Agostino Chigi ensured the villa’s magnificence by commissioning artists including Giulio Romano, Il Sodoma, Sebastiano del Piombo, and perhaps most notably Raffaello  Sanzio da Urbino – commonly known as Raphael.

Completed in the beginning of the 16th  century, Villa Farnesina was named after its second owner, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. Once he became Pope Paul III in 1534, the Farnese family’s wealth and influence continued to soar.

Upon your arrival in Rome, you will be invited to enjoy a panoramic city tour, passing by many of the most magnificent monuments, including the Colosseum  and Circus Maximus.

Your drive will then take you along the River Tiber and to the Villa Farnesina.

Spread over two levels, Villa Farnesina is embellished with splendid paintings and Renaissance decor throughout. When entering the villa, you will be greeted by a selection of Raphael’s mythical frescoes, including the celebrated Cupid and Psyche and The Triumph of Galatea.

On the first floor, you will discover rooms impressively painted by Peruzzi and Sodoma, including the ceiling of the Sala di Galaeta, adorned with 26 individual frescoed compartments, each a unique astrological spectacle. The artistic talents of Peruzzi, Romano, Sodoma, and Piombo continue onto the second floor, where you can enjoy treasured frescoes, including Sala delle Prospettive, a true masterpiece of perspective, showing views of Rome’s countryside.

All too soon, it will be time to leave this beautiful villa. A stop will be made at the trattoria Trasterverina for typical Italian appetisers before you return to your awaiting ship.

VISTAS - PHOTO TOUR OF ROME

Enjoy a walking tour of Rome, capturing images of the 'real' city en route.

Price£40.00 - £50.00
Duration10 hours
Free time includedFree time included
Shopping time includedShopping time included

Departing the quayside, we drive to Rome via the motorway, making a comfort stop en route. We shall then commence our tour, beginning at the Theatre of Marcellus, which was built by the Emperor Augustus in 23 BC for his nephew, who died before its completion. When it was completed in 11 BC, the semi-circular open-air theatre was more than 30 metres high, and could accommodate approximately 14,000 spectators (12,000 seated). We will see and photograph the remaining part of the exterior of the original theatre during our tour. We shall also be able to view columns from the Temple of Apollo, which once housed many works of art that the Romans plundered from Greece in the 2nd Century BC.

From here, after walking through the Portico of Octavia – once Rome’s fish market – we will reach the Fontana Delle Tartarughe, also known as the Tortoise Fountain. The fountain was commissioned in 1588 by the Mattei family, an important family of the time, to decorate the piazza. It was designed by Giocomo della Porta, and some claim that Bernini added the original tortoises (three of which are now housed at the Capitoline Museums).

During our guided walk through the Jewish Quarter, we can admire and capture images of ‘real’ Rome. Next, after crossing Via Arenula, we proceed to Piazza Farnese, passing by the Church of San Carlo ai Catinari, built in the early Baroque style. It was named ‘ai Catinari’ in reference to the number of dish-maker shops in the area at the time it was built. Our next stop will be outside Palazzo Farnese, which was the prototype for many palaces in the late Renaissance era. Construction began on the palace in 1517 by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, before the task was handed to Michelangelo following Antonio’s death. Today the palace houses the French Embassy. We shall spend some time here to capture images of the square and its buildings.

Our walking tour will conclude at Campo de’Fiori, a lively market square. The square, which was once a meadow, has always been used as an outdoor market place, and was at one time the site of public executions. Upon arrival here, we can enjoy some free time to explore the area independently, take additional photographs, or enjoy lunch or refreshments (at the guest’s own cost).

Following our free time, we shall walk to our tour coach for the return journey back to the quayside and our awaiting ship.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a considerable amount of walking. There will be approximately three hours of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. Guests are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes. Due to traffic regulations, places of interest may be visited in a different order to that described. For reference, the drive to and from Rome takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes each way; we will make a comfort stop en route. Drinks and snacks are not included in the cost of this tour; these will be at the guest’s own expense. Please note that there are NO inside visits during the duration of this tour – we will view the sites from the outside only. Whispers (headsets) will be used for the duration of this tour.
