Castries, St. Lucia

Introduction to Castries, St. Lucia

St Lucia is the sort of island that travellers to the Caribbean dream about – a small, lush tropical gem. With glorious soft white beaches, St. Lucia is the perfect place to lay back, relax and soak up the sun. Away from the beaches, there are many National Parks with beautiful fauna and native wildlife to explore.

St Lucia is a beautiful island that combines heritage and culture with peace, relaxation and tranquillity. A true Caribbean paradise, the island is home to a number of national parks with vast forests, native plants, wildlife and many beaches to relax on.

Castries, the vibrant capital of St Lucia is an interesting town with plenty to see and do. The streets are easy to walk through and navigate, so interesting monuments such as Derek Walcott Square are soon found. The square was named after a noble laureate that was born on the island and is home to a 400 year old Samaan tree and a unique cathedral built in 1897. A nearby market can be found in Jeremie Street, where a wide range of items including fresh fruit are sold.

Overlooking the town – and providing some splendid views – is Morne Fortune. Here the original French colonists built La Toc Battery, but it was taken by the British in 1796, and a new fort built in 1888 to protect the harbour: Castries was the only port in the Caribbean big enough to be a coaling station for the entire Royal Navy.

Journey through the lush Cul de Sac and Roseau banana plantations, pausing briefly for photographs at the charming fishing village of Anse La Raye, before continuing along a winding road on the edge of a rainforest, where there is an abundance of tropical flowers and trees. Upon arrival in Soufriere, view the dramatic Pitons - rising more than 760 metres (2,500 feet) - which tower over the entire area. Next, visit the Diamond Botanical Garden and Waterfall, where an array of exotic and brightly-coloured specimens of flowers and fruit trees mingle to form a perfect setting for garden lovers and photographers!

Following a scenic drive back to Soufriere, transfer to a sailing or engine-powered catamaran for a relaxing ride back to Castries, during which you can enjoy soft drinks, fruit juice or rum punch. Have your camera at the ready as you cruise out of the bay and bid farewell to the majestic Pitons! Cruising north along the coast, pause to swim in the crystal clear waters of a secluded bay.
